Aug. 1: Refuse Rates Rise; Memorial for Civic Leader Constance "Connie" Zimmermann

What is happening in town today? Refuse rates are going up starting Aug. 1. A memorial service is being held for a former civic leader.

Refuse Rates Rise

While in Aug. 2012 residents were getting a credit for recycling on their trash bills, starting today, Aug. 1, 2013, residents will find a smaller recycling rebate and a 1.5 percent increase in refuse rates.

In July 2013, the Village of Glen Ellyn’s Board of Trustees approved the rate increase. The village said that due to a decrease in the amount of items recycled and recycling market conditions, the rebate would also decrease. Last year, residents were expected to see about $2.15 rebate on trash bills. This year the rebate is 60 cents.

The changes are part of the new 5-year contract with the village’s refuse collector, Republic Services. In addition, there will no longer be unlimited clean sweep collection. The village said there was not as much demand over the last 10 years, while the need for funding to dispose of branches and brush for special post-storm collections has increased, according to the village.
