Hi Katherine -
John is a personal friend of Bill Newman, Post Commander at Veterans of Foriegn Wars of the US & thus shared his story for Bill's own large collection of Vet experiences. Then Bill generously provided it to About Town - as he's done with the stories of many other Canton vets - to share with others. It's good to know that there are alternate places to find information on the very personal experiences of our wonderful Canton vets; experiences that ultimately they truly own.

Hi Linda -
Spoke to Town Historian Mary Ellen Cosker & she advised that there was indeed a bride at Flaherty Rock at the end of what is now Simonds Ave that was used by those coming from New Harford & points west to get across the river. Not sure about the bridge being covered though. Thanks for the query!

Thanks for your input Heather. The column was based upon written documentation of the period, so I appreciate your 2011 opinion.
There can be no doubt that there was sacrifice during the war - there always is. And certainly the Collins Company, who created the town, understood the ramifications that the strike would have. I think that 's why they wrote the two letters to employees.
I don't think/hope anyone, including the Collins Company, wanted to deny a decent wage. The Company was apparently planning to give a 10% raise the year of the strike - sure like to have that now! The workers of the Collins Company were the back bone of not just the factory, but the town. Be nice to think that the Company that created it all understood that & did their best to get everything going again.
Thank you so much for your comment! It's good to know that our history still has relevance.

Thank you Mel! It's gratifying to know that there are so many others who love the history of this town as we all do at Canton-ct.Patch.com. I hope you keep reading - I just did research with Mary Ellen Cosker this afternoon at the Museum & found the actual letters from the Collins Company asking the strikers - who went on strike shortly after the Fortune article was written - to consider the impact the work stoppage was having on the entire town. Stand by.......it's coming! Thanks again for your comment.

Bill
That is hysterical. Where was a CantonPatch photographer when we needed them? And I thought powder blue, polyester leisure suits were the craziest thing about the '70's! Thanks for the memory. sylvia -

Thanks for your comment Lynn. The concept for About Town's Vet Stories was actually inspired by a vet who came to Canton High School to tell the students of his Vietnam experience for Veteran Voices. Shortly after, I connected with Bill Newman who graciously shared his own archieve of vet stories that you see each month in About Town.
Thank you & your students, for your web site that captures the vet experiences. We can't tell these stories enough. There is so much learning to be done from them.
