On the article Glen Ellyn Charges into the Future ... of Electric Cars

ReplyThis is an example of something that could have used more public input first. I would vote for more bike racks which have been heavily used by the train station. (Yes, I know it's getting cold.) It's funny that we spend hundreds of thousands dollars of public money on maintaining parking because it is perceived to be essential public benefit. We could say, "let the private sector pay for all of it" - and for the snow removal, too - and let's see what happens.

On the article Village Program Expected to Save Green as it Plants Trees

ReplyThis is a good first step, but it may take years to restore our Village forest to its former grandeur. Hopefully, the Village will manage our resource carefully and provide residents with good information to keep our trees healthy. There is a lot at stake. Trees that have been harmed by human activities have found it much tougher to survive our recent weather extremes.

ReplyThe 1.52 inch rainfall figure was from a COCORAHS rain gage in the east side of Glen Ellyn. By morning, another inch of rain fell. We got a lot!

ReplyIf we take solar off of any kind of tax incentives, let's do the same for fossil fuels. Let's see what the free market can do if we give solar a level playing field. For one, I applaud business like the floor company that are willing to take risks.

ReplyWithout getting judgmental one way or another, I noticed the congestion and confusion this afternoon by Memorial Field to be quite amazing, to the point that Pennsylvania Ave would benefit by being sealed off from through traffic, especially for any night events. I got through only by driving about 5 mph for the sake of safety.

ReplyThere is an interesting seminar next weekend about historical landscapes. I look forward to attending because in the old days we had clever ways to preserve our environment, and this wisdom became lost to much of us in the modern world. For details, see http://www.glenellynpreservation.org/

On the article Village Plans New Lights for Neighborhood
Jeffrey Gahris
12:09 pm on Wednesday, April 6, 2011
ReplyLED technology has incredible potential for streetlighting. It has the advantage of saving energy, and can be turned on and off remotely to save even more energy. Having said that, be aware that 100 new lights is a lot for a neighborhood of this size. It will be much, much brighter, and energy consumption might go UP, not down. If the Village uses properly designed and installed luminaries, they will not directly shine into bedroom windows. Even then, reflection off of the pavement might create a glow throughout the neighborhood, so that it will never be dark at night. The idea is to direct just enough light to where it is actually needed, and no more, through a good design that is sensitive to the environment and the residents who live there. Let's see how it turns out.

I have seen a coyote here before, and found it exciting. Even as I felt a tinge of anxiety being close to a wild predator, I felt more whole and integrated with nature, of which we are a part. I don't get that feeling sitting inside watching Animal Planet.
