ReplySo my 19 month old just scarfed down an enormous smiley face cookie, making me feel totally unqualified to dole out advice on this one. I'm grateful for the healthy food tricks you more experienced moms shared, though! Thanks!

On the article Recent Study Finds Autism, Vaccination Link 'An Elaborate Fraud'

ReplyFor now, I'm pretty glad that recent findings seen to be finding no link between child vaccines and autism. I thought the vaccine issue was interesting when I was pregnant two years ago, and I brought it up to my husband, who's an anesthesiologist, and as you might guess, totally for vaccinating kids. He and I really never seriously considered not vaccinating our son, though Jenny McCarthy's very public skepticism of vaccines at the time had me looking up a little bit of research. Ultimately, we figured we would be a lot more concerned that our little guy would contract something that he was not vaccinated for than actually get a disease as a result of the vaccinations. Being mired in ear infection season, I'm pretty glad that, because of vaccines, I don't have to worry as much about our son getting polio or pertussis.

ReplyHi Moms! Thanks so much for your feedback and for sharing your views. I think "Wife Swap" would be a great idea with Amy Chua; I would definitely watch that episode.
This was really interesting to me because the parenting thing is still pretty new to my husband and me, like I mentioned in the story. At this point, I feel like Chua's extreme parenting will push kids to do what she envisions them doing but at the sacrifice of their feelings or quite possibly their love and affection for the parent. But it might be an interesting experiment to try for just one week when our little man understands discipline a little better.
I think, at the heart of it, it's really about knowing what each of your kids responds to; while placing extreme expectations may motivate one kid, it could be totally different for another, right? Also, with all the differing perspectives on parenting out there and the thousands of books, the only way to parent with both love while setting limits is to really know your child. At least, I think so. I'll update the board in 20 years to see how much I've had to employ Tiger Mom tactics. -

ReplyThis was my little guy's first huge snow storm (he's 1 year old), which meant today was our first time really frolicking in the snow. Chandler was a little bit scared of the snowdrifts at first, but he soon got accustomed to the snowballs and then started wandering around, inspecting the snow mounds. We plunked him on top of a huge snow pile so he was the little prince of the mountain, and then I took him on a little snow tour of our subdivision. After an hour of playing outside, he had become fully enamored of the snow and couldn't stop waving "hello" and "goodbye" to the fluffy, white stuff.
