Glenbard West High School cross-country star junior Madeline Perez added two more Illinois state titles to her running resume over the weekend as her first-place finishes in the 1600-meter (4:52.24) and 3200-meter (10:22.29) races provided a 20-point boost for the Hilltoppers at Saturday’s 3A girls track state meet. According to the Suburban Life, Perez now has titles in races at (approximately) one, two and three miles, having set a state record in cross-country track in the fall of 2012 on the three-mile course. Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition. Glen Ellyn’s newest grocery store, The Fresh Market, is slated to open after the specialty grocer opens its Lincolnshire location in June, according to company officials. A firm opening date has yet to be revealed. In November, the Glen Ellyn Village Board approved the $12 million development, which brings the high-end grocery store to town. “We are excited about our continued expansion in the Midwest, and in Illinois in particular,” Rob Koch, vice president of real estate for The Fresh Market, said in a news release. “We look forward to building on the success of our other Chicago metropolitan area stores, and to providing customers in Glen Ellyn with the same quality products and excellent customer service.” The Fresh Market was founded …

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.
One drink could be the standard for drunken drivingat least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. Eagleton U.S. Courthouse to present local law enforcement officials with the Congressional Badge of Bravery, an award honoring exceptional acts of bravery in the line of duty by federal, state and local law enforcement officers. Among the six U.S. Marshals earning the award was fallen Glen Ellyn native, Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry who was killed during the apprehension of an armed fugitive in St. Louis on March 8, 2011.
