Venus in Transit: Watch Rare Celestial Event Tuesday

You'll probably be dead the next time this happens, so watch it on Tuesday evening.

A little after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, residents of our area will have an opportunity to witness one of the rarest predictable celestial events: a transit of Venus. Often referred to as the "Evening Star" or "Morning Star," Venus is the brightest natural object in our sky after the Sun and the Moon. As the second planet from the Sun, it's closer to the Sun than the Earth is.  A "transit" of Venus occurs when Venus passes between us and the Sun in such a way that we can see Venus's silhouette backlit by the Sun's brilliant light. It last happened in 2004, but it won't happen again until 2117. Unless you plan to shatter some human longevity records, this is probably your last chance. Lunar Eclipse a Sight to See Tonight

The first lunar eclipse in two years will occur tonight on the Winter Solstice.

Get ready to bundle up tonight and stare at the sky. The first lunar eclipse in two years will occur tonight, according to NASA. Glen Ellyn residents will have a perfect view as long as the weather clears up. Popular Science magazine is reporting that it will be the first total lunar eclipse on the Winter Solstice since 1639. Just image what earthlings were thinking way back when as they watched the night sky. To see the eclipse, start looking at the sky around 12:32 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The moon will begin to eclipse around 1:41 a.m. and will last a total of 72 minutes. The moon will even change color, becoming a dark orange-red as the eclipse takes place. An event not to be missed.
