David Garmoe pleaded guilty Friday and was sentenced to serve five years in prison for stealing more than $260,000 from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co.
A former volunteer firefighter with the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. was sentenced Friday to five years in jail for stealing more than $260,000 over the course of several years from the fire company. David Garmoe, 56, of the 600 block of Prairie Avenue, Glen Ellyn entered a guilty Friday morning. He pleaded guilty to theft in excess of $100,000, a Class 1 Felony, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Judge Daniel Guerin handed down the sentence. Garmoe was arrested in May 2011 and charged with allegedly stealing more than $260,000 between 2004 and early 2011 from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co., Glen Ellyn Patch reported. When former Glen Ellyn Volunteer Firefighter David Garmoe returns to court Nov. 16 in his theft case, it could be to finalize a plea. Garmoe was arrested in May 2011 and charged with allegedly stealing more than $260,000 between 2004 and early 2011 from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co., Glen Ellyn Patch reported. He was arrested on May 13, 2011 and was later released on a $500,000 bond with the condition that he stay away from the premises of the fire station and that he turn over his passport to the Glen Ellyn Police Department. The announcement comes on the heels of charges that David Garmoe stole more than $260,000 from the fire company while he served as treasurer.
The Village of Glen Ellyn announced that it will immediately put into effect a multipronged auditing system that will oversee the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company. Village staff, the fire company, and a private auditor will now be responsible for overseeing the financial records of the fire department. The new system was announced after David W. Garmoe, 54, of Glen Ellyn was arrested and charged Friday for stealing more than $260,000 from the fire company while he served as treasurer. In February 2011, officials with the fire company discovered the discrepancy in the fire company's bank account and an investigation revealed that Garmoe wrote unauthorized checks to himself and his business. Interesting how the sentences were all pretty much the same, but the crimes were very different. I'm surprised that hiring someone to attack another person or running a meth lab carries the same sentence as breaking a library window.   more ›
