Downtown Glen Ellyn Transforming into Winter Wonderland Saturday

Santa and his reindeer will be visiting downtown Glen Ellyn Saturday, turning downtown into a Winter Wonderland.

Snow is elusive this holiday season, but that isn’t going to keep Glen Ellyn’s downtown from turning into a winter wonderland. Saturday, downtown Glen Ellyn will be filled with holiday spirit, even if the weather doesn’t comply. From 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. families and shoppers are invited to hang out downtown, stroll through the shops, meet with Santa Claus and enjoy free carriage rides. Last year the Alliance of Dowtown Glen Ellyn held events every Saturday during the holiday season, but this year it chose to focus on one specific day, said Carol White, executive director of the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn. About 300 children and parents will be downtown after riding the Polar Express train, so the expectation is there will be a lot…

The number of women participating in the Ladies Night Out increased as did the amount of sales at downtown businesses.

The holiday shopping season is off to a great start in Downtown Glen Ellyn. And, the ladies in town helped make the season bright for retailers. Ladies Night Out, held Nov. 27, was the most successful to date, surpassing the number of participants last year and the amount of sales. The number of women who registered for the event was more than 600 this year, said Carol White, executive director of the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn. Last year about 500 women participated. Sales also exceeded expectation and last year’s numbers, she said. Carol White to Head Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn

Innovative marketing ideas will lead to a stronger downtown, she says.

Carol White is taking over as executive director of the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn. White is used to the demands of the role, she served as special events coordinator for three years. During that time White donated valuable time to craft ideas to lure business to downtown Glen Ellyn. Now, her time and effort are being rewarded with a chance to put her own stamp on Glen Ellyn’s downtown business. “If you ask people why they move to Glen Ellyn, they’ll say it’s the downtown. But if they don’t spend the money there, they won’t have a strong downtown,” White said. White’s role as executive director is to ensure downtown Glen Ellyn remains a strong center of the community. White began her new position July 16. She was tapped after a …

I wish Jan much luck in her new position - a position that is not really new to her now because she has been energetically developing it for several years. Hopefully people will remember that the Downtown Glen Ellyn Alliance was not the suggestion of a consultant but launched in 2006, from initiatives taken by the late Gary Webster, then Village Manager and based on initial conversations between …   more ›

Viewfinder: Final Friday Event Draws Large Crowd

The Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn's second Final Friday event of the year is the downtown's biggest to date.

For a few hours on Friday, downtown Glen Ellyn looked like a scene from a 50s movie, as classic cars lined Main Street.   A large crowd of festival-goers came out to enjoy Friday's festival sponsored by the Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn. After a successful June Festival, July turned out even better.  Besides the many cars on display, the Glenbard West Theater put on a face painting fundraiser, and Bob the Balloon Man continued his tradition of amazing balloon creations. And Gregory Hyde, singer and guitar player, entertained the many spectators throughout the evening. The last Final Friday of 2011 will be held August 25, and Carol White, executive director of the alliance, promises an even bigger festival.
