Wind, Cold and First Snowflakes Mark Winter's Arrival

Thursday's weather rollercoaster gives way to chilly Friday.

Update: First Snow of the Season Arrives

Winter storm warning in effect until early Friday morning.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 3 p.m. Friday, the National Weather Service is reporting.  The NWS, as of 7:30 p.m., expected snow totals to be closer to the four-inch range, with the higher amounts across the far north and northwest suburbs.  Winds will be up to 30-40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph. "The combination of the intense snowfall and very strong winds will result in greatly reduced visibilities and possibly near blizzard conditions. Falling temperatures will cause roads to become snow covered and (make) travel treacherous. This will …

The storm is expected to start with rain, which will intensify as it makes its way into the area, turning into snow late Wednesady night, according to the National Weather Service. Snow accumulation is also expected Thursday in the Chicago area. While it’s still uncertain how much snow will blanket the area, the National Weather Service is predicting winds will become strong Thursday afternoon into the evening, with gusts of about 45-50 mph expected. The strong winds may lead to blowing and drifting snow. Accuweather.com is predicting a quick freeze-up in the Chicago area leading to icy …
