The number of DuPage County residents who contracted West Nile virus has increased and another death related to the virus was confirmed Wednesday.

Officials confirmed Wednesday a Glen Ellyn resident is among the 28 people in DuPage County who have contracted West Nile virus. The number of deaths related to the West Nile virus has also increased to four, according to the DuPage County Health Department. Earlier in the week the health department confirmed three deaths in the county from the virus. Confirmed cases are expected to increase even though the weather should begin to slow activity of the mosquitoes which spread the disease, said David Hass, public information officer for the health department. Health Department Confirms Third West Nile Death in DuPage County

The number of West Nile virus cases reported nationwide is at the highest level since 2003.

Officials confirmed Monday a third person has died in DuPage County as a result of contracting West Nile virus. The DuPage County Health Department reported 25 people have contracted the virus, with three of those cases resulting in deaths. The confirmed cases of West Nile virus have affected people ranging in age from their 20s to 70s, said David Hass, public information officer for the health department. Health Department Confirms Second West Nile Death in DuPage County

The number of cases of West Nile virus continue to rise and more cases are expected to be confirmed, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

A second DuPage County resident has died as a result of contracting West Nile virus, the DuPage County Health Department announced Friday. The health department confirmed that the number of cases of West Nile virus in the county has risen to 15, with two of those cases resulting in deaths related to the virus. Lombard Village President Bill Mueller, 76, became the first West Nile fatality in DuPage County. He had been battling cancer since 2008, was hospitalized in early August and died last month. The 15 people affected by West Nile Virus are in their 20s to 70s, and are located in Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont. More West Nile Cases Confirmed in DuPage County; Residents Urged to Take Precautions

Additional cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed since last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

The DuPage County Health Department continues to urge residents to take precautions to minimize the risk of mosquito bites. The latest request comes as the health department said additional cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in DuPage County. The count has risen to 12 with cases of the virus confirmed in residents from Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont. Last week the health department confirmed there were seven cases of West Nile virus. Those with the virus range in age from their 20s to 70s, according to a news release from the DuPage County Health Department. So far only one fatality from the virus was confirmed. West Nile Cases Growing in DuPage County

More cases of West Nile virus are expected to be confirmed as additional reports have been received, officials say.

Cases of West Nile virus are on the rise, with a total of seven cases verified among residents of DuPage County. Since last week, two additional cases have been confirmed among county residents and officials expect the numbers to continue to grow. The DuPage County Health Department said the cases include residents ranging in age from their 40s to 70s. The virus has infected residents in Downers Grove, Villa Park, Naperville, Carol Stream, Lisle and Lombard. Lombard Village President Bill Mueller, 76, became the first West Nile fatality in DuPage County. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced this week that reported cases of West Nile Virus are at an all time high. “The 1,118 cases reported thus far in 2012 is the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the third week in August since West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999,” the CDC reported. While Illinois does not rank among the top five states in terms of cases, there have been 21 reported human cases of West Nile Virus in Illinois as of Aug. 21. Those cases have been clustered in the Chicago area, with 13 human cases in Cook County and one in Lake County. West Nile Virus has been found in 47 states and has infected a record 1,118 people so far in the United States in 2012.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that this year's outbreak of West Nile virus is the largest in reported history. The CDC began monitoring cases of West Nile virus in 1999, when it was first detected in the United States. The 1,118 cases reported so far in 2012 is the highest number of cases reported through the third week in August. In DuPage County, 5 human cases of West Nile virus had been verified earlier this week. The DuPage County Health Department expects the number of cases to increase, it has said.
