Family, friends, residents and more gathered on Sunday to remember Mike Kwasman. He passed away on April 17.
More than 200 people filled the West Chicago Community High School gymnasium on Sunday to honor the life of their beloved mayor Mike Kwasman. “He will not be forgotten by this community,” said Rep. Mike Fortner, West Chicago's former mayor, at Sunday’s memorial service. Kwasman, 65, passed away April 17, after he suffered a heart attack days before. He had been West Chicago’s mayor since December 2006, when he was first appointed as acting mayor. He won elections in April 2007 and 2009. The mayor of West Chicago has died, the city announced Tuesday afternoon. Mike Kwasman was surrounded by his wife Crystal and other family in the days following his heart attack on Saturday. He was admitted to Central DuPage Hospital that day. The mayor of West Chicago has been unconscious since arriving to a hospital Saturday after a heart attack, the city announced Monday evening. Mike Kwasman remains in critical condition on life support in a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, according to a City of West Chicago press release. He was admitted to Central DuPage Hospital following the heart attack. "Mayor Kwasman has always fought for the City he loves so much and for all of its residents," the release said. The mayor of West Chicago suffered a heart attack on Saturday, the city announced late Saturday afternoon. Mike Kwasman is in treatment at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. A 16-year-old girl died after being struck by a car in West Chicago Friday, according to police and media reports. The girl was hit near the intersection of Route 59 and Pine Street in West Chicago, a press release said. The West Chicago police department and fire protection district responded to the incident at about 9:11 p.m. Friday, March 9. The girl is from West Chicago and was identified by the DuPage County coroner’s office, the Daily Herald reports. The teen was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. Investigators are not certain what caused the death of a 22-year-old West Chicago man on Tuesday. The autopsy on Miguel Quinones was inconclusive, said Mike Uplegger, deputy police chief, on Tuesday night. Quinones was discovered on the grounds of West Chicago Middle School, 238 E. Hazel St., at 11:27 a.m. Tuesday. Police reported to the eastern edge of the school's campus near Lester and Bishops streets and found Quinones unresponsive. Hilltoppers hold off a late West Chicago rally to win 64-59.
Glenbard West started strong, scoring the first 11 points of the game and dominating the first quarter 16-1 over the West Chicago Wildcats. The Hilltoppers led until the fourth quarter when the Wildcats took a brief two point lead. Glenbard West fought back to take back the lead and win the game, 64-59. It was a welcome start for the Hilltoppers in the ninth annual Holiday Classic tournament. The offense and defense were hitting on all cylinders to start the game.
