VIDEO: Hayden Carlson's Big Hit on Lincoln-Way QB Helps Nab Championship Win

The junior defensive back led the team in tackles and laid a crushing blow to Lincoln-Way East quarterback Tom Fuessel to stop a fourth-quarter rally.

Holding onto a four-point lead in the Class 7A state championship game, Glenbard West needed a fourth-down stop to end a furious Lincoln-Way East rally. Enter Hayden Carlson, a junior defensive back for the Hilltoppers.  Lincoln-Way quarterback Tom Fuessel couldn't find anyone open in the end zone, so he scrambled to his right and made a dash for the go-ahead score. Carlson dove in to spin Fuessel into the air and stop him short of the goal line.  The big hit helped Glenbard hold on for the 10-8 score in the state championship.  Nicknamed the "Hitters," Glenbard West's defensive mentality was showcased best by Carlson on that hit, one of his 14 team-leading tackles.  Has he ever hit anyone harder? STATE CHAMPS! Glenbard West 'D' stops L-W East Cold

Glenbard West 10, Lincoln-Way East 8: Henry Haeffner's first-half passing and Hayden Carlson's ferocious defense powered the Hilltoppers to a heart-stopping victory in the Class 7A state championship game Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

Henry Haeffner played a game of hot potato with a cold football. Haeffner completed 10-of-13 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown in Glenbard West’s 10-8 victory over Lincoln-Way East in the Class 7A state championship football game Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Haeffner threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Nathan Marcus with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Hayden Lekacz added a 27-yard field goal as the Hilltoppers (14-0) extended their lead to 10-0 at halftime. Glenbard West turned to its defense to bottle up Lincoln-Way East's Tom Fuessel as the Hilltoppers wrapped up their first state championship since 1983 and handed Lincoln-Way East (13-1) its first defeat on a 30-degree afternoon and early evening. One of the trainers had told me that they switched the QB in the last drive. Just watched the tape. They did NOT. That's crazy, yo. That kid got splattered a half dozen times. His cousin was only in on the last play of the game.   more ›
