Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) on Tuesday introduced legislation to make the IRS Free File program permanent with Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI). Launched in 2003 as a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, the Free File program provides approximately 98 million eligible taxpayers with free online individual income tax preparation and electronic tax filing services, according to a press release from Roskam's office. “The Free File program is a win-win,” Roskam said in a statement. “Not only do middle income families save money on tax preparation each year, but there is no cost to the federal government, and the program has actually saved the IRS hundreds of millions of dollars. This is a common sense solution that helps …

The IRS has announced a delayed start to the 2012 tax filing season. Here's the date of when you can file, plus some locations Glen Ellyn to get help on your taxes.
If you are normally filing your taxes before the end of January — at the earliest possible date — and expecting a quick return, this year is going to be different. You'll have to wait. The Internal Revenue Service has revised its opening date for tax season — pushing it back eight days to January 30, 2013. The tax-filing deadline is Monday, April 15, 2013. The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on Jan. 30, 2013. Most taxpayers should be able to file on that date, though some revised forms may not be immediately available. The delay is due to the federal "fiscal cliff" crisis and the new tax bill Congress passed just after Dec. 31. You can find more information in this Forbes article. Electronic filing was originally set to start on Jan. …

Residents will see a slight increase in property taxes that will be collected in 2012.
Village Trustee Pete Ladesic was the only board member to vote against a 1.5 percent levy increase that would help fund pensions, general expenses and the Glen Ellyn Public Library. "I don't think that it's absolutely needed," Ladesic said during Monday night's village board meeting. Ladesic believes more could be done to "tighten the belt" before asking residents for more money. About $3.9 million will go to the library, and the remaining funds from the total levy of $10,454,440 will be directed toward the village. For Glen Ellyn residents with a home valued at $500,000, this means they'll now pay about $720 a year in village taxes, which is an $11 increase. Although it's only a slight increase, Ladesic said he had to vote against the…

Resources to ease the pain of tax season.
I've noticed recently that my husband has been looking at his computer screen with furrowed brow. IRS tax code (section 6721) mandates that employers deliver employee's w-2 forms by January 31 or face stiff penalties. Well, he's just received ours and has started some serious number crunching. Our entry into Tax Season has begun. In sympathy with his plight, I thought I might pass along some information about both library and non-library resources that might aid those of you beginning your own perilous journey. First of all, the library's webpage provides many useful links. For those of you that like to use printed material rather than electronic, the library has three copies of J. K. Lasser's Your Income Tax 2010 for general circulation …

Congressman Kind is an old Wisconsin friend who became Congressman to Wisconsin' 3d District following a 16yr tenure by my very fine friend US Rep Steve Gunderson for whom I served in his DC office for a number of years as his Legislative Director and in 1980 has his director of field operations for his very first run for congress. We defeated a three-term incumbent by .05% of the vote and off to…   more ›
