Schools Didn't Close Tuesday; Should They Have? Readers React

Patch reached out to our readers to see what they thought about the decision to keep public schools open in Glen Ellyn and Downers Grove.

Public schools in Downers Grove and Glen Ellyn were open on Tuesday despite the snow, although some nearby towns like Wheaton, Lisle and Naperville closed their public schools. All Glenbard high schools also had an early dismissal, and most area schools cancelled their after-school activities. Some private schools in the area—who often bring students from further away—were also closed, like the Avery Coonley School. I was surprised to hear all the closings announced before 9 AM, but by closing time it made more sense. Students attending those that didn't close had to walk through somewhat deep snow, and the parents who came to pick them up had to drive on slippery roads. Glen Ellyn School District 41 has canceled all after-school activities today due to the weather. Patch reported earlier: The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Chicagoland counties from 3 a.m. to midnight Tuesday and is predicting as much as 9 inches of snow could fall in some areas. "Light snow is expected to spread across northeast Illinois tonight and become more intense toward daybreak Tuesday and persist through Tuesday evening," the warning for five counties including DuPage reads. Glenbard District 87 schools will dismiss students early Tuesday, March 5. College of DuPage facilities will be closed until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Glenbard District 87 schools will dismiss students early Tuesday afternoon due to the forecasted weather. The schools will follow the regular PLC schedule and buses will arrive early to take students home. Follow the Midwest Storm with Our Weather Map Radar

As you likely know by now, what could be the heaviest snow of the year to date is on the way to Glen Ellyn and the Chicago area, set to arrive Thursday night. Patch has The Weather Channel's app for following the storm, including radar animations of the progress. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for DuPage County. The advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday. Accumulations of three to six inches of snow are possible. Ice and wind gusts are possible. Keep checking back, and be safe!

'Big Snow' Coming to Glen Ellyn? Weather Advisory Issued for DuPage County

Considering we haven't had much snow at all, any amount could seem "big."

As you head off to work Thursday, make a note, the weather is set to change, if predictions are accurate. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in DuPage County from 9 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday. Snow is expected to develop Thursday evening and continue into Friday, the NWS said Wednesday afternoon. The snow may mix with light freezing drizzle or rain Friday morning, making for slick travel. Storm total snowfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with ice accumulation of less than one-tenth of an inch. The Chicago area could see its "biggest snow of the year" Thursday into Friday morning, according to Accuweather.com. Winter Weather Advisory in Effect for Glen Ellyn

Rain is expected to turn to snow by rush hour Thursday night.

The weather is expected to get even sketchier as the day wears on. By rush hour, snow is expected to start falling. For drivers who use the tollways, the Illinois Tollway said it is mobilizing all available resources to keep roadways clear as the weather begins to change from rain to snow. For drivers traveling this afternoon and evening, the Tollway provides the following tips: Find real-time information about travel times and road conditions at the Illinois Tollway website. A winter weather advisory is in effect until midnight, according to the National Weather Service. Snow accumulations of two to four inches are expected, with more snow falling north of I-88.

More Snow’s on the Way for Glen Ellyn

Alberta clipper-type system moving into the Chicago area tonight, with snow expected into the morning.

If you like snow, smile, if now, frown. Regardless, it looks like we’re going to need our shovels come Monday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for snow beginning at 10 p.m. Sunday through midday Monday, with 3 to 5 inches of snow expected along a line north of Rockford to Chicago, which puts Glen Ellyn close to the line of greatest snowfall. Light snow showers may continue through the afternoon. The weather service says the storm system is well-organized and reminiscent of an Alberta clipper, a rapidly moving low-pressure system out of Canada that sometimes affect the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes region. Winter Storm, Icy Conditions Predicted Wednesday Night

Rain is predicted to turn to snow and quickly freeze-up causing icy conditions making travel difficult Wednesday night into Thursday.

A winter storm is expected to blow its way into Glen Ellyn late Wednesday bringing with it the winter weather we have avoided so far this winter. The storm is expected to start with rain, which will intensify as it makes its way into the area, turning into snow late Wednesady night, according to the National Weather Service. Snow accumulation is also expected Thursday in the Chicago area. While it’s still uncertain how much snow will blanket the area, the National Weather Service is predicting winds will become strong Thursday afternoon into the evening, with gusts of about 45-50 mph expected.
