Fermilab Comes Alive with Sounds of Science at Family Open House

Fermilab will be offering tours and hands-on science exhibits during it's annual Family Open House Sunday.

Families looking for an interesting science excursion may want to take a short ride Sunday out to Batavia and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Acceleration Laboratory. Fermilab will host its annual Family Open House Sunday, Feb. 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. in Wilson Hall. The even will include hands-on science exhibits and tours of some of the lab’s attractions. No registration is required to attend the Family Open House and more than 2,000 people are expected to attend. “We want to get kids doing activities that get them excited about science,” said Spencer Pasero, an education program leader at Fermilab in a news release. “We want them to come in, have fun, and think about science as something they could do.” Highlights will …

Venus in Transit: Watch Rare Celestial Event Tuesday

You'll probably be dead the next time this happens, so watch it on Tuesday evening.

A little after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, residents of our area will have an opportunity to witness one of the rarest predictable celestial events: a transit of Venus. Often referred to as the "Evening Star" or "Morning Star," Venus is the brightest natural object in our sky after the Sun and the Moon. As the second planet from the Sun, it's closer to the Sun than the Earth is.  A "transit" of Venus occurs when Venus passes between us and the Sun in such a way that we can see Venus's silhouette backlit by the Sun's brilliant light. It last happened in 2004, but it won't happen again until 2117. Unless you plan to shatter some human longevity records, this is probably your last chance.
