Christmas Basket Program Brings Holiday Joy to More than 500 People

The Glen Ellyn Junior Woman's Club with the help of donors, the Salvation Army and the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. brought joy to more than 100 families this holiday.

More than 100 families received Christmas baskets over the weekend continuing a Glen Ellyn tradition that has been happening for more than 60 years. With the help of donors, the Glen Ellyn Junior Woman’s Club, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. and the Salvation Army were able to bring some happiness to families in need this holiday. The baskets were distributed on Dec. 8 to families ranging in size from small to large. Donors adopted the families and provided gifts for all of the family members, according to the Glen Ellyn Junior Woman’s Club. Toys are gathered at area toy drives and food is donated by the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army Band bands together in Glen Ellyn in the spirit of Christmas.

Glen Ellynites (and, I’m sure, a few Lombardians) poured into Wal-Mart this past Saturday to finish up some last-minute shopping. “Super Saturday,” as the Saturday before Christmas is known in retail circles, is often the time to get closest-to-Black Friday deals. Deciding to take full advantage of the opportunity presented before them, members of the Salvation Army Band gathered at multiple locations, in place of the usual bell-ringers. The small ensembles brought the holiday spirit and Christmas joy to multiple shoppers by playing carols, such as Good King Wenceslas, that are commonly associated with Christmas.   Band member Bill Himes was all smiles at passing shoppers, holding his cold baritone closely in between songs.
