The New Year has arrived and if you are like most people you’ve made a few resolutions. Often people resolve to give back more to their communities, and keeping that in mind, here are some local organizations who are always looking for volunteers. Catholic Charities sponsors the annual event, which helps thousands of people in DuPage County.
Volunteers were busy sorting books Friday at the SCARCE warehouse in Glen Ellyn in preparation for the upcoming back to school fair at the DuPage County Fairgrounds. The nonprofit hopes to give away 12,000 books to children in need during the annual back to school event. Along with the books that will be available, families will be able to get much needed back to school items. Catholic Charities sponsors the event being held Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 W. Manchester Road, Wheaton. In addition to school supplies, a number of agencies, including the DuPage County Health Department, will be on hand to offer information and, in some cases, services. For 22 years, McKeen has been helping to educate others about recycling and sustainable living.
When Kay McKeen was growing up, her family lived the “waste not, want not” lifestyle. Her parents and grandparents instilled in her the belief that you didn’t waste anything and you didn’t hurt anything, even a leaf on a tree. Vacations were spent camping, out in nature or having picnics. Back in those days, it wasn’t called being environmental. So, it may be no wonder that the woman who said she spent time as a girl with her aunt, a Girl Scout leader, cleaning up highways gathering soda bottles to clean the roadway and to also cash in for refunds, helped create a local nonprofit that has not only acted locally, but had a positive impact on others globally.
