Letter: Where Are the President's Spending Cuts?

Wheaton resident writes in support of Peter Roskam's calls for presidential leadership in battling the county's deficits. To submit a letter to the editor, email Charlotte@Patch.com.

Patch accepts and publishes letters to the editor emailed to Local Editor Charlotte Eriksen at Charlotte@patch.com, or sent as a message through the Patch Facebook page. Please note in subject lines the message is a Letter to the Editor. ------------ President Obama has repeatedly campaigned on a message of hope and change, promising to reform the way Washington, D.C.  operates. I'm disappointed that instead of striving for those ideals, our President chooses to travel the country blaming the other party for our country's issues, rather than working with everyone in Congress to help strive for bipartisan solutions to our nation's problems, the foremost being our budget.   Since 2008, I have often heard the President, both on and off the …

Roskam: Sequester Remarks Show 'Void of Presidential Leadership'

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam responds to President Obama's remarks on the sequester.

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (IL-06) responded to President Obama's remarks on his sequester with the following statement Tuesday: “Today, the void of presidential leadership was on full display. Instead of getting in a room with Senate Democrats and passing a sequester replacement plan, President Obama chose to get behind a podium and give yet another speech. Noticeably absent from his speech was the fact that House Republicans have already passed two alternatives to the sequester his White House proposed in the last round of budget negotiations.   “Everyone agrees that the sequester is not an artful way to achieve the spending cuts that our bloated federal budget desperately needs. But the president gets it wrong when he demands that Americans…

DG Guy, I resided in Judy's district before and after redistricting. True she was in office for over ten years mostly due to name recognition I think. For the last several years she did nothing of any value. She did manage, as a last gasp, to get Navistar a sweet deal in Lisle though. I saw her at several town hall meetings were she just went on talking points never responding with any substance …   more ›

Letter: Rep. Roskam Needs to Support President's Gun Safety Proposals

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. For consideration, contact Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

Recent mass shootings are hitting too close to home. My sister lives just outside of Aurora, Colorado. One of my cousins shops in the Clackamas Mall in Oregon and another cousin attended Virginia Tech when the shooting occurred there. A good Glen Ellyn friend is friends with the parents of the little girl who was the sole survivor of her class in Newtown. I cannot sit still any longer. If this is not the moment to change things, then what will the next moment look like? Even today, Representative Roskam does not support universal background checks for firearm purchases or any other gun violence prevention measures being discussed in Washington DC. Following the tragedy in Newtown, there is real political momentum. We must act now to …

Thanks Kathleen - we all need to call Rep Roskam. I have many times. Please call him - and call him many times. I also wrote him letters and sent emails. We need gun control - we can't tell who is going to 'snap' next. It is impossible. We must limit access to weapons.   more ›

Roskam: State of the Union Address Will be 'Inauguration Speech 2.0'

Peter Roskam talks about President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address on CNBC.

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) said he doesn't expect to see President Barack Obama embrace bipartisanship in his State of the Union address Tuesday night, according to CNBC. He said he'd like to be surprised with some bipartisanship from Obama, but thinks the speech will be his "Inauguration Speech 2.0." The following message is from Peter Roskam's office: The President’s Illinois Worldview Isn’t Growing the Economy “You take Illinois spending patterns and extrapolate that onto the U.S. economy and that’s where the president is proposing to lead us—to about $26 trillion in debt. I don’t think we’re going to hear a lot about how the president can grow the economy through the private sector and why unemployment is still at a nagging 7.9 …

Roskam Introduces Bill to Make IRS Free File Program Permanent

Congressmen Peter Roskam (IL-06) and Ron Kind (D-WI) introduce bill to make IRS Free File program permanent for eligible lower- and middle- income taxpayers.

Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) on Tuesday introduced legislation to make the IRS Free File program permanent with Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI). Launched in 2003 as a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, the Free File program provides approximately 98 million eligible taxpayers with free online individual income tax preparation and electronic tax filing services, according to a press release from Roskam's office. “The Free File program is a win-win,” Roskam said in a statement. “Not only do middle income families save money on tax preparation each year, but there is no cost to the federal government, and the program has actually saved the IRS hundreds of millions of dollars. This is a common sense solution that helps …

Congressman Kind is an old Wisconsin friend who became Congressman to Wisconsin' 3d District following a 16yr tenure by my very fine friend US Rep Steve Gunderson for whom I served in his DC office for a number of years as his Legislative Director and in 1980 has his director of field operations for his very first run for congress. Lette to the Editor: 'I Agree With My Congressman' on Fiscal Cliff Issues

A Wheaton resident writes in support of Peter Roskam's views related to the fiscal cliff. Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Send letters to maryl@patch.com.

Congress: Job Half Done? While it was good to see some solution to the 'fiscal cliff' situation from Congress, does anyone really question that Congress has only completed half of the task before them?  The Obama Administration calls for a 'balanced approach' but only really desired to address increased revenues.  We all know that revenues alone will not solve the problem. I agree with my Congressman, Peter Roskam of the 6th District, when he calls for curbing 'out of control' spending.  Roskam believes that the only way our economy will rebound is to put in place a strong economic foundation.  That foundation must be built with measurable spending cuts.  Is it unreasonable to think that our federal government is immune to the same budget …

Letter to the Editor: Newtown Rampage is a Turning Point

A Glen Ellyn reader contacts Congressman Peter Roskam's office to inquire about his stance on gun rights after the Newtown shooting and the future of NRA campaign donations and receives an inadequate response.

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Letters should be submitted for consideration to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com. --------------- As a parent and grandparent, I was moved to tears by the tragic shootings at Newtown, Connecticut. I am not opposed to gun ownership. Many enjoy hunting and they should be able to continue to do so. I have never owned a firearm or even discharged one in my life, and I have never understood the need to own an assault weapon. In today's reality we permit these dangerous offensive weapons to exist in every state across the country. On Sunday, I asked myself two questions. Am I really prepared to say that I am powerless in the face of the Newtown carnage, that the politics are too …

VIDEO: Roskam Talks Fiscal Cliff, Tax Reform on CNBC

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam says the fiscal cliff can be avoided, and thinks there is an opportunity to bring Republicans and Democrats together to work on tax reform.

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (IL-06) appeared on CNBC's Kudlow Report Thursday to discuss the fiscal cliff and the House push for tax reform.  He said there is a "tremendous opportunity" to avoid the fiscal cliff because of House Speaker John Boehner's comments Wednesday on a willingness to discuss more revenues.  "The House has already acted on one proposal that says move forward and extend the current tax rates for one more year, and use that as a bridge to tax reform," he said. "Before there were voices on the Democratic side that were saying, 'Well let’s just go over the fiscal cliff.' Well that’s a bucket of crazy. Nobody wants to go over the fiscal cliff, it’s ridiculous." Roskam said he predicts President Barack Obama will extend tax …

Roskam Re-Elected to 6th Congressional District Seat

Peter Roskam wins the 2012 General Election in Illinois' 6th Congressional District.

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) won re-election in Illinois' 6th Congressional District Tuesday over Leslie Coolidge after getting 30,864 more votes than the his challenger, with all precincts reporting.  Roskam said he plans to be a part of turning the economy around, and his work on the House Ways and Means Committee will be a platform to do so. "Our tax code is a disaster, and most Americans recognize that it’s a disaster," he said Tuesday at Arrowhead Golf Club in Wheaton. "And most Americans are very open to trying to reform the code." He said the House will begin to put together a "very substantive" tax reform effort focused on making the U.S. tax code the most competitive in the world. "If we do that we’ll be in a much better footing …

Letter to the Editor: Leslie Coolidge Understands Fiscal Responsibility

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Please send letter to local editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

Glen Ellyn Patch accepts and publishes letters to the editor emailed to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com. Please note in subject lines the message is a Letter to the Editor. ------------ Letter to the Editor: Why has Peter Roskam refused to debate his challenger, Leslie Coolidge for the IL 6th congressional seat? Perhaps he can’t defend his record. A record of extreme ideology and partisan gridlock that was harmful to our economic recovery. A record of putting pledges to lobbyists (Grover Norquist) above duty to constituents.  Peter Roskam voted twice for the “Ryan Budget”. A draconian budget which cuts necessary programs, including veterans’ benefits and FEMA. A budget that expands corporate welfare for Super PAC …
