How to Keep Your New Year's Resolution

Five tips to help you keep your resolutions.

Are you making a resolution or many resolutions this year? Do you want to lose weight, gain a new skill or organize your house? Whatever your resolution is, here are some tips to help you stick to it throughout the year. 1. Make it attainable. Be sure that your resolution is attainable. Sticking to your monthly budget is attainable—making a million dollars may not be. 2. Tell everyone. If you tell everyone about your resolution, you are more likely to keep it. If you want to quit smoking, you can even go as far as telling your friends that you'll give them $50 if they catch you lighting up. 3. Be specific. If you want to get fit in the new year, set a specific goal. For example, instead of saying you want to get fit, say you want to lose …

Hey Mom and Dad: What Is Your New Year's Resolution For Your Family?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to Hey Mom and Dad—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting.  Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the western suburbs. With recent gun violence in the news, some parents have told us they plan to cut back on their kids' consumption of violent movies or video games. Others may want to eat more family dinners together or have their kids spend more time outside. This brings us to this week's question: Take a look at what Patch users throughout the western suburbs had to say and join the conversation in …

What Would You Improve in Glen Ellyn in 2013?

If you could make a New Year's resolution for Glen Ellyn, what would it be?

More than 45 percent of Americans make a resolution every year, according to statisticbrain.com. Some people vow to live a healthier lifestyle, others promise to spend more time with family, and many say they will try to save money. As millions of Americans make resolutions to improve their lives, what could we do right here in Glen Ellyn to make it an even better place to live? In 2012, the Village of Glen Ellyn created the Process Improvement Team to help make the process of opening a new business in town easier. It addressed issues related to transparency. And, on the business front, it was announced that and a new high-end grocery store will open in town next year.  We've heard there need to be more quick dining options downtown and …

I think 2013 is likley to bring opportunities for residents to learn more about maintaining and preserving our trees, protecting local lakes and streams, and managing storm water. I hope many of us will use those opportunities.   more ›

Patch Poll: How Long Do You Stick to Your New Year's Resolution?

We start the new year out by wanting to improve our lives. So what happens when the going gets tough?

A new year is upon us. A new year represents a time of new beginning, an opportunity to better ourselves, to make things right. What can you do? How about volunteering at the local food panty? Or, take an exercise class at the park district? Or use the vast services of the library more often? Making a new year’s resolution is all well and good, but then you have to carry it out. So this week’s poll asks how long do you stick to your new year’s resolution? Last week’s poll: Was the Iraq War worth the effort? A total of 86 percent said no, and 13 percent said yes. John Regals called the war the “stupidest thing this country ever did. For the sake of those killed and wounded I hope I'm wrong, but the odds of Iraq establishing a stable nation …
