Letter: Guns Do Kill People

To the Editor: The National Rifle Association and its supporters like to say: "Guns don't kill people; people kill people." The fact is, though, that it is much harder to kill without a gun and so easy to kill large numbers very fast with semi- or fully automatic weapons. The recent school incident in China (taking place about the same time as the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting) illustrates this point perfectly. There, a mad man entered a school intending to harm a class of 22 small children. Because he had only a knife, no one was killed, although a few people were injured. In our highly religious nation, how is it that gun owners and the financial interests of the gun industry trump the lives of so many, including those of little …

A Glen Ellyn reader contacts Congressman Peter Roskam's office to inquire about his stance on gun rights after the Newtown shooting and the future of NRA campaign donations and receives an inadequate response.

Letters should be submitted for consideration to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com. --------------- As a parent and grandparent, I was moved to tears by the tragic shootings at Newtown, Connecticut. I am not opposed to gun ownership. Many enjoy hunting and they should be able to continue to do so. I have never owned a firearm or even discharged one in my life, and I have never understood the need to own an assault weapon. In today's reality we permit these dangerous offensive weapons to exist in every state across the country. On Sunday, I asked myself two questions. freedom is choice. If you don't want guns, that's your business. I do and that's my Shame on the Patch for sturbusiness. The right to bear arms is NECESSARY to a free nation. Conneticut is pretty far away and yours and everyone else's emotions are getting in the way of reasonable thought. Shame on the Patch for stirring up peoples emotions.
