The number of cases of West Nile virus continue to rise and more cases are expected to be confirmed, according to the DuPage County Health Department.
A second DuPage County resident has died as a result of contracting West Nile virus, the DuPage County Health Department announced Friday. The health department confirmed that the number of cases of West Nile virus in the county has risen to 15, with two of those cases resulting in deaths related to the virus. Lombard Village President Bill Mueller, 76, became the first West Nile fatality in DuPage County. He had been battling cancer since 2008, was hospitalized in early August and died last month. Additional cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed since last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.
The DuPage County Health Department continues to urge residents to take precautions to minimize the risk of mosquito bites. The latest request comes as the health department said additional cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in DuPage County. The count has risen to 12 with cases of the virus confirmed in residents from Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont. Cases of West Nile virus are on the rise, with a total of seven cases verified among residents of DuPage County. Since last week, two additional cases have been confirmed among county residents and officials expect the numbers to continue to grow. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that this year's outbreak of West Nile virus is the largest in reported history. The CDC began monitoring cases of West Nile virus in 1999, when it was first detected in the United States. Just days after reporting the first human case of West Nile virus in DuPage County, a Villa Park man was the second person diagnosed with the virus. Earlier this week, the DuPage County Health Department reported a Downers Grove woman in her 50s was the first person diagnosed with the virus in the county. Thursday, the health department said a man, also in his 50s, has the virus. The health department is encouraging residents to take precautions against the bites, since the number of mosquitoes infected with the virus is high this year. Mosquitoes have been found with West Nile virus in 89 different pools around the area, according to the DuPage Health Department.
The dry, hot weather created the perfect breeding environment for mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus. The virus is widespread around the area in mosquitoes known to carry the virus. Now, officials with the DuPage County Health Department are reinforcing the need for residents to take extra care to protect themselves from mosquito bites. At this time last year there was only one positive test for West Nile virus, according to a news release from the DuPage County Health Department. Today, the department reports 89 mosquito pools have tested positive for the virus so far this summer. Mosquitoes tested positive for West Nile virus in Lemont.
The DuPage County Health Department announced Friday that the first positive test for West Nile Virus (WNV) in 2011 was discovered in a mosquito trap located in Lemont. The mosquitoes that tested positive were collected on Wednesday and Thursday. According to the health deparment announcement, the wet and cool spring that the county experienced this year delayed the development of the mosquitoes that spread the WNV. The hotter temperatures we are now experiencing are more conducive to the spread of WNV, which explains the positive test discovered in Lemont. It’s official: Mosquitoes to test positive for the West Nile virus have been discovered in northern Illinois, according to information released by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). “We are starting to see West Nile virus in mosquitoes and birds, and when temperatures rise and conditions dry up, we typically see increased reports of West Nile virus,” Dr. Damon T.
