Glen Ellyn Park District Weighs Spending Options for Maryknoll

The park district has $30,000 to spend before the year is out.

At tonight's meeting the Glen Ellyn Park District will discuss how much money to pour into Maryknoll Park. The park board learned it can use the $30,000 that was intended for a safety village on Maryknoll Park.   Board President Melissa Creech said the $30,000 grant was given to the park district in 2008 so a safety village could be constructed at Maryknoll Park. However, the park district voted down the project at a previous meeting, leaving the $30,000 untouched. "We needed to figure out what could be done with the grant," Creech said. The park district recently learned that it could still use the grant secured by State Representative Sandra Pihos (R-Glen Ellyn). There are two catches, though: The money must be spent on Maryknoll Park, …

Park District Resources Making a Profit

The Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center and Maryknoll Park show significant profits in 2010 while Sunset Pool managed to control loss of membership revenues.

The Glen Ellyn Park District received healthy financial reports on its main parks and facility usage in 2010.  The Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center and Maryknoll Park were in the black while Sunset Pool almost offset lost membership revenue, according to the park district’s 2010 financial reports revealed at Tuesday’s Board of Commissioners meeting. Ackerman Facility Manager Dan Kroger said the new building gave the park district a $77,715.42 profit pending a projected December utility cost, which Board President Ed Hess said was a “resounding success.” The net gain was more than $33,000 over the facility’s original budget estimation. “Talking to commissioners from other park districts, they are amazed that we are making money off it,” …

Park District Volleys Over Platform Tennis Proposals

The commissioners narrowly pass proposal to build new courts, center for Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis Club.

Corrections have been made to this article for clarification. After a heated exchange between commissioners, the Glen Ellyn Park District board approved a $350,000 construction agreement with Glen Ellyn Platform Tennis Club during an Oct. 19 meeting. The agreements were passed after a heated debate between the commissioners and officers, resulting in two 4-3 votes. President Edward Hess, vice president Ron Aubrey, treasurer William Dallman and commissioner Sandra Minogue supported both agreements. Commissioners Melissa Creech, Jay Kinzler and Julia Nephew dissented. Platform Tennis, an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, wanted to join with the park district by constructing two tennis courts at the Maryknoll Safety and Recreation Center …

When Fall's Chill Sets In, These Athletes Paddle On

Platform tennis gains popularity in Glen Ellyn, with a free clinic at Maryknoll Park on Sept. 18.

Shades of pink and purple smear a sunset sky as four Glen Ellyn dads dart around the village's Maryknoll Park inside what looks like a fenced-in, mini-tennis court.    On one side of the net, Marty Engel holds his paddle, shaped like a flattened black lightbulb with holes, as a rubber ball bounces in bounds on the court and shoots past him. In normal tennis, the point would have been lost. But this is not normal tennis. This is platform tennis. And so Engel glances at the ball as it bounces off the side screen of the court, and then spins diagonally and hits the back fence. As it bounces back toward him, Engel whips the paddle over his head and connects with the spongy sphere, which flies back over the net, bounces in and past the two men …
