STATE CHAMPS! Glenbard West 'D' stops L-W East Cold

Glenbard West 10, Lincoln-Way East 8: Henry Haeffner's first-half passing and Hayden Carlson's ferocious defense powered the Hilltoppers to a heart-stopping victory in the Class 7A state championship game Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

Henry Haeffner played a game of hot potato with a cold football. Haeffner completed 10-of-13 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown in Glenbard West’s 10-8 victory over Lincoln-Way East in the Class 7A state championship football game Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Haeffner threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Nathan Marcus with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Hayden Lekacz added a 27-yard field goal as the Hilltoppers (14-0) extended their lead to 10-0 at halftime. Glenbard West turned to its defense to bottle up Lincoln-Way East's Tom Fuessel as the Hilltoppers wrapped up their first state championship since 1983 and handed Lincoln-Way East (13-1) its first defeat on a 30-degree afternoon and early evening. Dream Matchup: Glenbard West vs. Lincoln-Way East

The Class 7A Illinois football championship is a game two years in the making. After Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East were upset as favorites in 2011, they found their way back in 2012.

I could have written this column last year. After all, Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East were destined to meet in the Class 7A state championship game.  They were both 9-0 heading into the playoffs, were ranked Nos. 2 and 4 in state by The Chicago Tribune and were on opposite sides of the 7A bracket, ensuring a likely showdown between the Hilltoppers and the Griffins.  Then, in the second round of the 2011 playoffs, the offenses (which both averaged 38 points per game heading into that round) sputtered. Lake Zurich topped Glenbard West, 10-3, while Wheaton-Warrenville South blanked East 7-0.
