Glen Ellyn School District 41 has accelerated plans to improve school security systems after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.
In the wake of the December shooting that killed 26 people at an elementary school and one other person at a secondary scene in Newtown, CT, Glen Ellyn School District 41 has accelerated its plans to improve its school security systems. In the past few weeks, all schools and the Central Services Office have had security upgrades installed, including a video-phone/buzzer entry system, security cameras and wireless duress buttons, District 41 spokesman Julie Worthen said Tuesday. The upgrades will improve security around entryways and allow office personnel to see and talk to visitors before letting them in the building, she said. The Glen Ellyn Police Department has recently received reports of a man acting suspiciously near Lincoln Elementary School.
UPDATED: Dec. 19, 8:50 a.m. Parents with children in Glen Ellyn School District 41, and particularly Lincoln Elementary School, are being warned about a man in his 20s exhibiting “suspicious behavior” near the elementary school recently. Late Tuesday afternoon, the district issued a message to the school community in regard to "stranger-danger safety." The district said reports have been made with the Glen Ellyn Police Department related to a man in his 20s who has been seen in the area of the school and acting suspiciously. Officials from District 41 in the message said the police are investigating the incidents. Anyone who witnesses “suspicious or disturbing” behavior is asked to call 911 immediately. A number of special activities are planned throughout the year and former students are invited to participate.
Students at Lincoln Elementary School will be celebrating a major milestone in the school’s history this year. The elementary school is celebrating its 50th anniversary and next week, a year of festivities will kick off with a very special back to school ice cream social. Other festivities will take place over the course of the year and the school hopes former students will come back to participate. Every year the school hosts its ice cream social, but this year it ties in specifically with the anniversary, said Kristin Massey, Abraham Lincoln PTA president. The ice cream social is normally held the first week of school, but to tie in with the actual anniversary of the first day of school at Lincoln, it will be held on Tuesday, she said. …

From District 41 The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education has approved the appointment of Jeff Burke as interim assistant principal for both Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Franklin schools effective immediately. Jeff replaces Linda Schweikhofer, who was recently named interim principal for Abraham Lincoln School. Burke joined District 41 in 2006, teaching third and later fourth grade at Abraham Lincoln; since 2011 he has been the math specialist for Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Franklin, a role in which he built strong relationships at both schools.
