Letter to the Editor: Milton Township Republicans Organize Volunteer Activities

We welcome letters to the editor. For consideration, contact Charlotte Eriksen at charlotte@patch.com. Or share letters in Local Voices.

To the editor: For several years the Milton Township Republican Committeeman and friends have volunteered to improve our township for our families and businesses.  In 2013, we plan on building upon this tradition by cleaning a portion of the Prairie Path and raising money for those in need to benefit the Milton Township Food Pantry.  First, on April 27th, 2013, the Milton Township Republican’s and friends will gather to clean a section of the Illinois Prairie Path.  We will meet at the intersection of President and Crescent Street in Wheaton, at 9:30 a.m. Second, on May 18th the organization will have volunteers raising money for the Milton Township Food Pantry at the Wheaton Farmers Market and Taste of Glen Ellyn.  During these tough …

Btw, I have lots of stuff like this, if the "Real Voters" in Milton Township should become aware of the true nature of Township Government and the people behind it - it could become like the Pitch fork and torch time when hundreds show up to the Township HALL (which leaks like a sieve thanks to the no bid renovation by the Chris Hiedorn). and all start to question the management maleficence of …   more ›

Letter: How the Y Strengthens Northwestern DuPage County

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Submit letters for consideration to Local Editor Charlotte Eriksen at charlotte@patch.com.

By Harley Jordan, President, Board of Directors, B.R.Ryall YMCA of Northwestern DuPage County As the pace of our lives moves faster and faster and the demands on our time increase, the ties to our community become even more important. A strong community provides us with a stable base that helps us deal with the pressures of daily life. At the Y, strengthening community is our cause, and in northwestern DuPage county, the B.R. Ryall YMCA provides an anchor to our community that gives all of us —regardless of age, income or background—the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. At the B.R. Ryall YMCA, strengthening community means more than providing a place to swim laps or lift weights, and while physical health is incredibly important to a …

Letter: Thank You for Supporting MEF Raffle

Glen Ellyn Patch accepts letters to the editor for consideration. Letters may be submitted to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

I would like to thank everyone involved in the MEF/flour + wine project, your teams and all the other people that made this fundraising initiative so amazing.. and amazingly successful! The MEF, the students, teachers and administrators, will benefit in a different way, possibly from a stronger community belief and stronger community ties. We all hope to see MEF moving in a direction of strength and sustainability; I hope the new energy we created this year will propel a wonderful program onward and upward.     We began this initiative with a goal of $5,000; and while some thought that was slightly out of reach, when we brought the raffle to a global audience, we not only reached our goal, but doubled it; bringing home $10,000 for the …

Letter: Conroy Encourages Kids to Doodle 4 Google

Letters to the editor may be submitted for consideration. Submit letters to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

Dear Editor, Stimulating a child’s creative thinking and tapping into a young person’s imagination are as vital to the lifelong learning process as math and reading. And now, Google is making it a little bit easier – and a whole lot more fun – for us parents to encourage our kids to tap in to their creativity and think outside of the box. Doodle 4 Google is a nationwide contest that will end with one lucky and talented winner having their “doodle” featured on the Google homepage and receiving a $30,000 college scholarship for themselves, plus a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school. It sounds great, but what’s a doodle? It’s the fun, interactive, educational, and sometimes surprising versions of the Google logo that appear on the …

Letter to the Editor: Conroy Says Make Every Day a Day of Service

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Letters may be submitted to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor and letters to the community. Letters may be submitted for consideration to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com. Dear Editor:   This past weekend, volunteers across America participated in the National Day of Service and selflessly gave back to their communities. From volunteering at after-school programs to picking up litter in a state park to countless other worthwhile efforts, we would not be the nation we are without the kindness and generosity of the unsung heroes among us.  There was simply no better way to honor Dr. King’s legacy than by recognizing the National Day of Service on the weekend before Martin Luther King Day, for our commitment to bettering our communities is …

Thank You to Glenbard West Community

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Letters may be submitted to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

Dear Glenbard West High School community,  Once again the community came through!  Because of the generosity of the people in the Glenbard West community all 85 ELL (English Language Learners) received a brand new beautiful Glenbard West hooded sweatshirt for the seventh consecutive year. The appreciation displayed by the students assured me once again that this project is worthwhile. ELL students have unique challenges at home and school and by receiving this gift they feel pride and they feel valued. It is surprising to them that people they do not know would want to do something nice for them. You helped make a difference in someone’s life. Thank You!  Patti Denney Glenbard West High School ELL Community Liaison

Why 41? Responds to District 41 Superintendent Ann Riebock

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Letters may be submitted to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

The following is a letter in response to Dr. Ann Riebock’s, Glen Ellyn School District 41 superintendent, opinion letter in the January 10th, 2013, Glen Ellyn News.   As parents of Glen Ellyn District 41 students and active members of the community, we agree with many of the sentiments expressed by Dr. Riebock in her January 10th letter and would like to express our gratitude toward the members of the District 41 Think Tank for their hard work to ensure that our schools continue to evolve appropriately.  However, the tone of Dr. Riebock’s letter suggests that we are a community resistant to change and what is needed is an effort focused on “translating these ideas into a change effort that stakeholders understand and support.”  To be clear…

Lette to the Editor: 'I Agree With My Congressman' on Fiscal Cliff Issues

A Wheaton resident writes in support of Peter Roskam's views related to the fiscal cliff. Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Send letters to maryl@patch.com.

Congress: Job Half Done? While it was good to see some solution to the 'fiscal cliff' situation from Congress, does anyone really question that Congress has only completed half of the task before them?  The Obama Administration calls for a 'balanced approach' but only really desired to address increased revenues.  We all know that revenues alone will not solve the problem. I agree with my Congressman, Peter Roskam of the 6th District, when he calls for curbing 'out of control' spending.  Roskam believes that the only way our economy will rebound is to put in place a strong economic foundation.  That foundation must be built with measurable spending cuts.  Is it unreasonable to think that our federal government is immune to the same budget …

According to this article: "Roskam supports tax code reforms to make the system fair for all American families and businesses alike. He wants to eliminate corporate loopholes and will work across party lines to do it." Excuse me? Did I hear you right?   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Retired Teacher's Solutions for Illinois Pension Crisis

Glen Ellyn Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Letters may be submitted to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com.

Dear Editor, I am a retired teacher with a vested interest in protecting the integrity of all publicly funded pensions. I am also extremely frustrated that there has been so little consideration of the real underlying problems our State faces: an unfair state income tax structure, an unwillingness to accept reality with regard to a sales tax on services, and an unrealistic repayment schedule for our pension debt. Illinois is one of only 7 states in the nation which employs a flat tax and, until the recently enacted temporary increase, at 3% for individuals was dead last in the rate imposed. Even now, at 5% (until 2015), we are not the most highly taxed of this group. A flat tax is inherently unfair: 83% of states with an income tax and …

If only our elected officials weren't criminally incompetent, they might have figured this out for themselves. Unfortunately, you could expose them to such commonsense means to correct the pension deficit problem and they would still do nothing (unless each was assured he or she would personally be enriched in the pocketbook). To the voters who continually elect such fools: you got what you …   more ›

Letter: Include Special Recreation Association in Holiday Giving

Letters to the editor may be submitted for consideration to Local Editor Mary Ann Lopez at maryl@patch.com

Dear Editor: At this time of year, our thoughts turn to family, friends, holiday celebrations, and giving to others.  I am the parent of a 20-year old daughter, Kelsey who has Down Syndrome.  As most parents, I want to provide the best for her.  Kelsey's primary focus right now is to be with friends, and family, have fun and "learn new stuff".   One of the most important parts of Kelsey's life is the time she spends participating in the programs at Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA). Without WDSRA, special needs adults and children wouldn't have opportunities to socialize, travel, learn, and well, just have fun. WDSRA serves more than 4500 adults and children with special needs in more than 1500 recreation programs, …

WDSRA is a fantastic organization as well as all the special recreation associations located throughout DuPage county. It is crucial that these organizations thrive and continue providing programs for special needs individuals of all abilities, from the toddler years all the way through adulthood! Without their support to local park district programs, inclusion would not be possible. My daughter …   more ›
