Lake Ellyn Boathouse Opens For Summer

Lake Ellyn Boathouse not affected by master plan in 2013, open for summer rentals.

While Lake Ellyn master plan improvements include plans to revamp and restore the Lake Ellyn Boathouse to it's 1937 design, it'll be open for normal business and rentals in 2013, according to a message on the Glen Ellyn Park District website. "The recently approved master plan for Lake Ellyn Park does not call for changes to the boathouse in 2013 and will not affect operations or rentals," the message reads. The boathouse closes mid-December through the end of February and reopens for rentals the first weekend of March. The facility can be rented for weddings and other private parties with seating for up to 120 people.  The park district board in January gave the district the nod to move forward to find funding for improvements included in…

Flood Prevention Projects Possible at Lake Ellyn

Park officials will receive a report next week outlining projects, which could cost up to $300,000.

A report offering recommendations for flood prevention at Lake Ellyn will be presented to Glen Ellyn Park District officials next week. Last week, the report was presented to the Village of Glen Ellyn’s Board of Trustees and it highlights proposed recommendations, which could cost up to $300,000, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune. The recommendations include increasing the lake’s discharge up to its maximum along with adding a culvert connection along Riford Road, according to the story. The village purchased some properties in an effort to rehabilitate areas that were eroding while funneling water away from Glen Ellyn.  Some fixes have already been made and the village has taken the lead on the work and will continue to do so, …

Lake Ellyn Park Master Plan Preliminary Sketches to be Revealed Oct. 22

After a strong turnout at its first meeting, the Glen Ellyn Park District expects many residents to share feedback at its next Lake Ellyn Master Plan meeting.

Hundreds of residents concerned about the future of the Lake Ellyn Boathouse and Lake Ellyn Park have shared their feedback with the Glen Ellyn Park District as it begins the process of creating its Lake Ellyn Park Master Plan. On Oct. 22, residents are invited to attend a forum where preliminary sketches and design plans based on public input will be revealed. The park district held its first public meeting in late August to gather feedback from residents. About 70 people attended the first meeting, said Dave Harris, Glen Ellyn Park District director. In addition, park district officials sent out surveys to nearby neighbors, met with community stakeholders, groups and other residents who use the park. “I think the community as a whole, …

Real Estate: What $399,000 Buys You in Glen Ellyn

A look at homes for sale at different price points in Glen Ellyn.

Location is one thing that cannot be changed when buying real estate, and this home at 699 Chidester Ave. listed at $399,000, is only a few blocks away from Lake Ellyn.  The three-bedroom, two-bath home was built in 1951 and appears to have good bones, but could use some updating. The listing suggests it could also be scraped for a new home to be built. It is being sold as is. With hardwood floors, plaster walls and Kohler fixtures, the home could be a good first home for a family. The home, which is 1,275 square feet, features fireplaces, central air, a basement, a wooded yard and a two-car garage. Do you have a home you'd like featured in this column? Trustees Approve Study of Lake Ellyn

The study will examine the cause of overflows from storms among other operating characteristics at Lake Ellyn.

After significant flooding in 2010 and 2008, Glen Ellyn village trustees want to take a closer look at how Lake Ellyn operates. The study will try to determine what caused extensive flooding but it will also look at day-to-day trends and operating characteristics at Lake Ellyn. At Monday's village board meeting, trustees voted to split the four-month study with the Glen Ellyn Park District at a cost of $51,500 for RHMG Engineers services.  Lake Ellyn is designed to detain runoff water before it is funneled through a series of pipes to Perry's Pond and then on to the East Branch of the DuPage River.    Due to extensive flooding, the study will examine that system and seek to answer how overflows can be controlled to ultimately better …
