Despite being only a freshman, Diab edges defending state champion and senior Ajani Cargle from Lincoln-Way co-op, 56.7 to 56.35.
Glenbard West freshman Alex Diab won the all-around title during Friday's IHSA boys gymnastics championship at Lincoln-Way East in Frankfort. Diab had a bit of a mishap on vault which reduced his score to an 8.85 but that didn't keep him from producing a 56.7, which was just enough to knock off defending all-around champion, Lincoln-Way co-op senior Ajani Cargle, who had a 56.35. Diab registered the top score of the night on four events: still rings (9.7), high bar (9.65), parallel bars (9.65) and pommel horse (9.45). The Hilltoppers also were in action as a team and came up just short of heading back to Glen Ellyn with a trophy. They took a distant fourth place with a 152.6. Wheaton co-op won the title with a 160.8, Lincoln-Way co-op was …

Finally, one of my autistic daughter’s fixations has morphed into something constructive.
High on the list of autistic traits are “narrow interests,” which can range from the fairly benign, like a nerdlinger obsession with American presidents and dinosaurs, to the mildly annoying, like Thomas the Tank Engine, to the more, shall we say, impactful, like dismantling toilets. There is virtually no obsession too esoteric that it cannot be indulged today via the Internet, specifically sites like YouTube. We have many little friends that are into elevators, and you would be amazed at how many videos can be found of random people riding elevators … and helpfully telling you details about them. Suffice to say that if I ever find myself at the Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke, VA, I will never have to wonder if their JC Penney has a Dover …

Glenbard West makes second consecutive trip to the state finals. Senior Becky Mladucky is the Hilltoppers top finisher, taking ninth place on uneven parallel bars.
Seniors Megan Brennan, Shannon Dietz and Becky Mladucky wrapped up their stellar careers at Glenbard West over the weekend as the Hilltoppers competed in the IHSA State Finals for the second consecutive year. Glenbard West finished in seventh place with a 144.650. The Hilltoppers respected the talented teams they competed against, but stressed focusing only on their team and hitting routines. "It was a very difficult meet with very good competition here," Mladucky said. "We went in not knowing what was going to happen, but we worked our hardest, and I mean, we only had two misses." Carmel celebrated its second straight title late on Saturday evening. The Corsairs finished with a 149.45. Lake Forest (148.450) was the runner-up, followed by …

Glenbard West wins Tuesday's Lake Park sectional to advance to the state finals for the second consecutive year.
Another narrow victory over Glenbard North, another sectional title and another trip to the state finals. The great run of the Glenbard West girls gymnastics team continued during Tuesday’s Lake Park sectional as the Hilltoppers finished ahead of runner-up Glenbard North 146.525 to 145.125. The 1.475 scoring difference was only slightly better than last season when the Hilltoppers beat the Panthers, 146.525 to 145.125 in the Glenbard West sectional. Just like a season ago, the Hilltoppers used eight different gymnasts. Although the Hilltoppers won, it took them awhile to get going on Tuesday. The team had mixed results when opening on beam with Missy Guzman (9.45) and Becky Mladucky (9.4) finishing in second and third place respectively. …

Every Glenbard West gymnast in Saturday's meet advances to the Lake Park sectional.
As a returning state qualifier, the Glenbard West girls gymnastics team doesn't have to make its presence known. That's because everyone knows how talented this group of Hilltoppers is once again this year. The Hilltoppers opened post-season play in Saturday's Glenbard West regional and showcased their depth and talents by securing 22 of the 25 ranked qualifiers to the Lake Park sectional. Glenbard West won easily with a 145.6. York finished a distant second place with a 134.075, Glenbard East was third with a 128.450 and Willowbrook placed fourth with a 123.2. During regional play, the top five individual finishers in each of the four events, as well as the all-around, earn a trip to sectional play. Glenbard West swept the top five spots …

Gymnast Alex Diab is making a name for himself.
Meet Alex Diab, one of the top gymnasts in Glen Ellyn and on everyone’s radar across the nation. Alex is the son of Mark and Jennifer Diab, owners of Premier Gymnastics Academy. The oldest of five children, Alex has been doing gymnastics since he was 2 years old. Because of his early start, he is in level 9 in competitive gymnastics. Alex has been fortunate enough to travel for many of his competitions. Some of the coolest locations he has been to include Las Vegas and Orlando. His favorite thing about gymnastics is learning new tricks and going to meets. He says that he enjoys the entire experience. His favorite event is rings and his favorite skill is a double back on the floor. Gymnastics takes a lot of time and practice in order to …

Mother Nature forces the postponement of Tuesday's Glenbard West regional. The regional has been rescheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
You can hardly blame any kid who looks forward to a snow day. A chance to stay up late, sleep in and then lounge around in the warmth of their home wasting away the day on Facebook and video games while bingeing on Entenmann's. The Glenbard West girls gymnastics team didn't get the snow day on Tuesday, but the forecast of inclement weather forced the Glenbard West Regional to initially be moved from 6:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. before being postponed. School has been canceled for Wednesday so the team will get a snow day after all. While the Hilltoppers would have preferred to compete on Tuesday night, they'll now have to wait until 2 p.m. on Saturday to host their regional. The favorite to win and move on to the Lake Park sectional, the …

Becky Mladucky wins the all-around to help the Glenbard West edge Hinsdale Central for the first conference meet championship in school history.
The Glenbard West girls gymnastics had never won the West Suburban Conference Silver Division meet prior to Saturday. The Hilltoppers edged Hinsdale Central, 144.625 to 144.450, to make school history in winning the conference tournament at York. Hinsdale Central, which finished 5-0 in regular season conference play, was awarded the outright conference champion as a combination of the conference meet and regular-season results were calculated. "This is actually the first time we've won the meet outright," Glenbard West coach Carlos Fuentes said. "The one time we did tie for the conference championship we were second in this meet so it's a nice first accomplishment for us." Senior Becky Mladucky led the way for the Hilltoppers winning the …
