Glenbard West Principal Named Educator of the Year

Chamber of Commerce recognizes Glenbard West Principal Jane Thorsen as the educator of the year.

The Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce and Village Fair Committee presented Glenbard West High School Principal Jane Thorsen with their Educator of the Year award during the Community Awards Celebration on March 16, Glenbard District 87 announced Monday. The event recognizes the Citizen of the Year, Outstanding Firefighter, Police Officer, Senior Citizen, Educator, Business and Non-Profit Organization for their contributions to Glen Ellyn. According to a District 87 news release, Thorsen's "collaborative leadership style and positive rapport with students, staff, parents and the community have had a significant positive impact on Glenbard West." Glenbard West Hires New Assistant Principal

Glenbard District 87 hires Christopher Mitchell as the new assistant principal for student services at Glenbard West High School.

The Glenbard District 87 school board on Monday approved the hiring of Christopher Mitchell as the new assistant principal for student services at Glenbard West High School. Peter Monaghan, the current assistant principal for student services will be the new school principal when principal Jane Thorsen retires June 30 after seven years at Glenbard West. Mitchell, currently a dean at St. Charles North High School also taught science in Oswego, and has his degrees from Aurora University, Disrict 87 Superintendent Dr. David Larson said Monday. Floral Symphony Supports Glenbard South, West Music Programs

The flower show with a twist will be held on Feb. 27.

From Glenbard District 87 Plan to join us at the Floral Symphony and enjoy unique floral arrangements by master florists. This is a flower show with a twist. Local florists create exceptional arrangements, while the master of ceremony entertains and describes the dazzling designs. This fund-raiser benefits the music programs at Glenbard South and Glenbard West. Floral Symphony will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at Glenbard South, 23W200 Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn. Tickets are $15 at the door. Glenbard West Speech Team Competing at State

Students will be competing in five events this weekend during the State Speech Tournament.

Students from Glenbard West High School will be representing this weekend when they compete at the State Speech Tournament in Peoria. Nearly every year, the school sends students to state competition. During the state tournament, members of the Forensics team will be competing in five events. Glenbard South, West National Merit Scholarship Finalists Announced

In February, roughly 15,000 semifinalists are notified across the country that they are finalists for scholarships.

Six Glenbard Township High School District 87 high school students have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, which is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Finalists have met high academic standard, receiving a recommendation from their principal and earning SAT scores that confirm the earlier qualifying test performance. In February, roughly 15,000 semifinalists for scholarships are notified by mail  that they have advanced to finalist standing. High school principals are notified and provided with a certificate to present to each finalist, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. A student from Glenbard South and Glenbard West are among candidates chosen from across the country to receive the honor.

From Glenbard Township High School District 87 Two students from Glenbard Township High School District 87 have been chosen as candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program, which honors some of the country’s most distinguished high school seniors.   Congratulations go out to Glenbard South High School student Andrew Bean and Glenbard West High School student Matthew Udelhofen. Up to 141 students are chosen from among outstanding graduating seniors to become Presidential Scholars. Scholars are selected on the basis of their accomplishments in the areas of academic and artistic success, leadership and community & school involvement. Glenbard West Boosters Continue Fundraising Mission with Upcoming Event

The Glenbard West Boosters have been helping to provide program funding at the school for more than 50 years. On Feb. 2, the group will hold a Vegas-inspired fundraiser.

In the last 10 years, the Glenbard West Boosters have helped raise and donate more than $1million to help fund programs ranging from academics to co-curricular activities at the high school. The boosters fundraising tradition continues with its upcoming Vegas-themed event being held Feb. 2 at the Crowne Plaza. Former Glenbard South Student Pleaded Guilty to Computer Tampering Charges

Abraham Ali, a former Glen Ellyn resident, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge last week in DuPage County Court.

A Glenbard South graduate pleaded guilty last week to charges he tampered with computers at Glenbard High School District 87. Abraham Ali, formerly of Glen Ellyn, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor computer tampering, a reduced charge, on Thursday, the Daily Herald reported.  In 2009, Ali used a “password sniffing” program to break into the district’s computer system to change two failing grades to Ds, according to the Daily Herald story. He was sentenced to 60 days of jail work release and 20 days in the DuPage County Sheriff’s work alternative program. Stay up to date on Glen Ellyn News.
