PHOTOS: Proud Glenbard West Fans Greet the State Champions

Hundreds turned out to honor the state champion Hilltoppers when they got back from Champaign following the Class 7A win over Lincoln-Way East.

The word made its way through the throngs of people waiting for the return of the state champion Glenbard West Hilltoppers: when you hear the fire department sirens, you'll know the football team is getting close. If anyone in Glen Ellyn had not heard about the Hilltoppers 10-8 victory over Lincoln-Way East in the Class 7A football championship, the Fire Department escort certainly helped bring that fact home to them. The Hitters returned home with their perfect season intact. And as they do after every win, the team made its way to the bell, with each player tapping it to the delight of the crowd that had gathered on that cold hill. For the seniors, it was the last time up that hill, but what a way to end their careers. The crowd then …

STATE CHAMPS! Glenbard West 'D' stops L-W East Cold

Glenbard West 10, Lincoln-Way East 8: Henry Haeffner's first-half passing and Hayden Carlson's ferocious defense powered the Hilltoppers to a heart-stopping victory in the Class 7A state championship game Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

Henry Haeffner played a game of hot potato with a cold football. Haeffner completed 10-of-13 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown in Glenbard West’s 10-8 victory over Lincoln-Way East in the Class 7A state championship football game Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Haeffner threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Nathan Marcus with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Hayden Lekacz added a 27-yard field goal as the Hilltoppers (14-0) extended their lead to 10-0 at halftime. Glenbard West turned to its defense to bottle up Lincoln-Way East's Tom Fuessel as the Hilltoppers wrapped up their first state championship since 1983 and handed Lincoln-Way East (13-1) its first defeat on a 30-degree afternoon and early evening. One of the trainers had told me that they switched the QB in the last drive. Just watched the tape. They did NOT. That's crazy, yo. That kid got splattered a half dozen times. His cousin was only in on the last play of the game.   more ›

Dream Matchup: Glenbard West vs. Lincoln-Way East

The Class 7A Illinois football championship is a game two years in the making. After Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East were upset as favorites in 2011, they found their way back in 2012.

I could have written this column last year. After all, Glenbard West and Lincoln-Way East were destined to meet in the Class 7A state championship game.  They were both 9-0 heading into the playoffs, were ranked Nos. 2 and 4 in state by The Chicago Tribune and were on opposite sides of the 7A bracket, ensuring a likely showdown between the Hilltoppers and the Griffins.  Then, in the second round of the 2011 playoffs, the offenses (which both averaged 38 points per game heading into that round) sputtered. Lake Zurich topped Glenbard West, 10-3, while Wheaton-Warrenville South blanked East 7-0. Glenbard West defeated Lake Zurich 19-13 in a Class 7A football semifinal game Saturday. The game was played at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn.

Once was enough. Twice was not going to happen. Glenbard West rode the first-half passing heroics of Henry Haeffner to a 19-13 victory over Lake Zurich in a Class 7A football semifinal game Saturday in Glen Ellyn. Haeffner passed for 141 yards and two touchdowns in the first half as the Hilltoppers punched their ticket to the Nov. 24 state championship game in Champaign. The victory was sweet for Glenbard West, which was ousted in the second round of the playoffs last season by Lake Zurich. Watch the game come to life here in our Patch photo gallery.

7A Football Semifinal Game Moved to Glenbard South

Glenbard West will face Lake Zurich at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Class 7A football semifinals. But the game will be played at Glenbard South.

The site of the big game has changed. Glenbard West (12-0) will face Lake Zurich (10-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Class 7A football semifinals. But the game will be played at Glenbard South rather than on Glenbard West's home field. The change comes as a result of last Saturday's heavy rains and freezing temperatures overnight this week that made preparing Glenbard West's field difficult, according to an IHSA news release. "I want to commend the coaching staffs and administrations at both schools for working together on this matter and reaching a decision that was best for the student-athletes," IHSA assistant executive director & football administrator Craig Anderson said. Glenbard West advanced by nothing a 3-0 victory over Wheaton North…

How easy a project do you take this to be, Janille? I understand your enthusiasm (for the record, I would not fight improvements.....nor would most of my neighbors), but this is not a simple case of NIMBY. There are serious issues that need to be worked out. And money is the least of them. I live on a hill in a 1920s house with a cinder block foundation. Never had a drop of aqua iny basement in …   more ›
