When the severe storms hit on April 18, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company's members mobilized to help in town and in neighboring communities.
Responding to a total of 43 calls for service the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company helped residents deal with flooding and assisted those in need during water rescues on April 18. The fire company also responded to smoke investigations, gas leaks and fire alarms, among the many calls, said Craig Eldridge, the fire company’s public information officer. In addition, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company also assisted neighboring communities, sending the swift water rescue boat and personnel to Elmhurst and additional fire apparatus to Lisle, he said. Firefighters responded to a fire late Friday afternoon in the 100 block of Park Boulevard.
A fire in a single-family home Friday afternoon remains under investigation, according to fire officials. Officials report there were no injuries in the fire, which took place in a home in the 100 block of Park Boulevard. The structure fire was reported at 4:48 p.m. and upon arrival members of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. found a home full of smoke and a fire burning inside one of the bedrooms, Craig Eldridge, public information officer for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. said in a news release. The fire was quickly extinguished and the smoke was cleared, he said. The fire caused significant damage to a bedroom and the hallway. A 21-year veteran of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. will finish out the term of fire chief after the recent resignation of Pete Campbell.
The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. has chosen Jeff Buccola as fire chief. Buccola will serve out the five months that were remaining when Pete Campbell resigned from the position. Buccola is a 21-year veteran of the volunteer fire company. He will serve as the chief of the company until the annual election takes place in April 2013. Recently Campbell resigned the position of fire chief due to personal reasons, according to the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. A new leader for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. was expected to be chosen Friday, but the department has yet to release information on the new leadership.
The chief of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. has resigned from the department. A veteran of the department for 31 years, Pete Campbell resigned recently without offering any explanation, according to a story in the Daily Herald. Typically, the fire company holds elections among the volunteers in April, but a vote was expected Friday, according to the story, which said Campbell was working with the Interim Chief Jeff Buccola on the transition. A statement from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. is said to be forthcoming as to the future leadership of the organization, said Craig Eldridge, the public inforation officer with the volunteer fire company. A family was able to safely evacuate its home Monday morning in the 100 block of Hillcrest Avenue.
A small fire early Monday morning on Hillcrest Avenue destroyed a backyard deck on a home, but everyone inside the home was able to evacuate safely. At 1:49 a.m. the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. responded to a call of a fire at a home in the 100 block of Hillcrest Avenue, according to Craig Eldridge, public information officer for the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. The fire on the home's deck was quickly extinguished after crews arrived, Eldridge said. The family of four was asleep when the fire started, but awoke from the sound of the home’s smoke alarms. Sparky the Fire Dog will be on hand Saturday as the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Co. holds its annual open house and safety expo to kick off Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13. Children will have the opportunity to meet with Sparky and participate in a number of activities that are planned. One person was injured in what appeared to be a rear-end accident Tuesday afternoon.
A car accident Tuesday afternoon left one car overturned on its side and its driver requiring medical attention, police said. The accident took place at about 2:30 p.m. at Park Boulevard and Sheehan Avenue, according to Glen Ellyn Police Department Deputy Chief Bill Holmer. Investigating officers from the Glen Ellyn Police Department believe the accident began with a possible rear-ended collision, Holmer said in a news release Tuesday afternoon. The driver that caused the accident veered off after making contact and the vehicle landed on its side, Holmer said. The driver who veered off needed to be extricated from the vehicle. A gathering of residents, village officials, firefighters and police officers gathered Tuesday to honor those who died on Sept. 11.
A small gathering of residents, officials, firefighters and police took a moment Tuesday to pause and reflect on the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company held a special ceremony to remember those who died in the terrorist attack in New York, at the Pentagon and on Flight 93. The pledge of allegiance was said, the American flag was lowered, a moment of silence was held and then a bell was rung. Eleven years after the tragic events of Sept. 11, the Glen Ellyn community will come together Tuesday for a short remembrance ceremony.
At 8:59 a.m. Tuesday, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company, first responders, residents and officials will take a moment to stop and remember the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The fire company is inviting residents, and anyone who is interested, to attend the remembrance ceremony. Every year, about 40 to 60 members of the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company attend the ceremony, which began in 2002, said Craig Eldridge, public information officer for the fire company.
