New Glen Ellyn Ordinance Regulates Secondhand Stores

Some local storeowners say the measures, aimed at targeting thieves who resell stolen goods, will damage their business.

The Glen Ellyn Board of Trustees has unanimously passed an ordinance forcing secondhand store owners to photograph much of their merchandise intake and enter it into a database, a measure aimed at curbing the resale of stolen goods, the Chicago Tribune reports. According to the paper, Glen Ellyn police say the ordinance, which also stipulates that store owners must take information for sellers and hold items for four days before selling or melting them down, will make it easier to recover people’s stolen items from a database. (Some items, like coins, are exempt.) In the past, criminal activity was seen most in pawnshops. Village Says No to Ordinance Monitoring Secondhand Item Sales

The Village of Glen Ellyn's police department sought to require some businesses to record and hold second hand items.

Businesses that buy and sell secondhand goods in Glen Ellyn will not have to participate in a program that would have required them to hold items for a 7-day waiting period.  The Village of Glen Ellyn’s Board rejected a proposed ordinance that would have required businesses that sell secondhand items to photograph, record them in an online database and wait the seven days so police could determine if they were stolen, according to a story in the Daily Herald. The ordinance came before the board at its regular business meeting Jan. 28 and was unanimously rejected, according to the story. Business owners said the ordinance would have disrupted business. Glen Ellyn Man Sentenced to Four Years in Baseball Bat Beating

Joseph A. Martinez, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery last week in DuPage County Court.

A Glen Ellyn man was sentenced to four-years in prison for beating a neighbor with a baseball bat earlier this year. Joseph A. Martinez, 40, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon last week, according to a story in the Daily Herald.  DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin sentenced Martinez to four years in prison.  On the evening of April 24, Martinez was arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery after Glen Ellyn Police responded to a call of two men fighting in the 300 block of Duane Street. Police found the 39-year-old victim was "bruised and bleeding from the head," Glen Ellyn Patch reported.  The Daily Herald reported prosecutors said the victim suffered severe injuries and required 15 staples to close the head…

Glen Ellyn Bank Robbed at Gunpoint Saturday by Man in His '70s'; Suspects Arrested

The Bank of America, 600 Roosevelt Road, was robbed of an udisclosed amount of cash. The suspects were caught after fleeing the scene.

Two men were arrested Saturday afternoon after an armed robbery of Bank of America in Glen Ellyn. At 11 a.m., officers were called Bank of America, 600 Roosevelt Road, for the report of an armed robbery, according to the Glen Ellyn Police Department's Deputy Chief Bill Holmer. An employee at the bank reported a white male in his 70s demanded money, displayed a gun and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash, Holmer said.  The suspect left the scene in a vehicle, which officers were able to tail to Lombard, he said. Officers cornered the men at the intersection of St. Charles Road and Main Street. A gathering of residents, village officials, firefighters and police officers gathered Tuesday to honor those who died on Sept. 11.

A small gathering of residents, officials, firefighters and police took a moment Tuesday to pause and reflect on the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company held a special ceremony to remember those who died in the terrorist attack in New York, at the Pentagon and on Flight 93. The pledge of allegiance was said, the American flag was lowered, a moment of silence was held and then a bell was rung. Justin M. Morrison, 23, of the first block of Hawkins Circle, Wheaton, was arrested at 12:39 a.m. at Roosevelt Road and Main Street, police said. He was charged with possession of stolen property, driving with out insurance and no registration. Someone reported a purse was stolen at 1:15 p.m. at the Ackerman Sports Complex, 800 St. Charles Road, police said. Theft under $500: A male juvenile was charged Dec. 12 at Glenbard West High School after a victim claimed the juvenile stole a mobile phone out of his backpack. On Dec. 14 a 14-year-old juvenile was cited for stealing an i-Pod from the backpack of a classmate at Glenbard West. Retail Theft: On Dec. 16 police were dispatched to Dominick’s on Roosevelt Road after employees reported the theft of six bottles of alcohol valued at $252.16 by unknown perpetrators.
