On April 17, the Glen Ellyn Chamber will host an informational meeting about its October 2013 trip to Cuba.
Travel to Cuba was off limits for years and then in 2011 new travel rules went into effect allowing more people to visit the island known for Fidel Castro and cigars. Now, area residents interested in visiting Cuba have an opportunity to travel with a group through a partnership of several area chambers of commerce. On April 17, the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce will host an informational meeting about the 7-day trip taking place in October 2013. The Glen Ellyn Community Awards were given out earlier this month and Skuddlebutts was honored as business of the year.
When the Glen Ellyn Community Awards were announced and Business of the Year was presented to Skuddlebutts Pizza & Catering it came as quite a surprise to the owners. The awards were given out in a number of categories, including Business of the Year. Owners Steve Adams and Danny Glover said receiving the award was a great accomplishment as a new business in the area. “It makes Steve and I feel good to be recognized by the community,” Glover said. The Community Awards Breakfast will be held on March 16 at 7:30 a.m.
Community Awards nominations are underway. Residents are encouraged to submit the names of residents, nonprofits and businesses for consideration in this year’s award. The awards have been presented since 1963 to recognize outstanding contributions to the community. The annual Holiday Walk being held Friday will include events at the Glen Ellyn Public Library, the tree lighting ceremony and visits from Santa Claus.
Downtown Glen Ellyn will feel like a Currier & Ives painting – minus the snow – Friday, as the annual Holiday Walk kicks off the holiday season. From free horse and trolley rides to the lighting of the Christmas tree, downtown Glen Ellyn will be filled with festivities. The annual Holiday Walk will be held Nov. 23 and the theme this year is “Winter Wonderland,” according to the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. Residents lined up to drop off documents at the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce's shred event.
More than 5 tons of documents were safely disposed of last weekend during a Community Shredding Event. The event, held Saturday brought residents out in droves and more than 11,000 pounds of documents were collected, according to the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. "We had a steady stream of cars all morning, with residents thanking us for providing this valuable service," said Georgia Koch, the chamber's executive director. "Our thanks to our partners, Community Bank Wheaton/Glen Ellyn and the Glen Ellyn Police Department for making this possible." In addition to the shredding, the Lions Club collected eyeglasses and Run Today gathered used athletic shoes for the Winged Food Foundation.

The Glen Ellyn Halloween Parade will step off at 10 a.m. Saturday. Main Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and Crescent Boulevard will be closed until 1 p.m. for trick or treating.
A Glen Ellyn Halloween tradition continues this weekend as the Halloween Parade takes center stage downtown. Children and parents, families and friends will be parading through downtown in their cute, crazy, crafty costumes. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Prairie Path Park. Children will begin lining up at 9:45 a.m. “Easily, 1,200 or so kids with their families,” will be parading through town, said Georgia Koch, co-executive director of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. “There are people who are coming back now who went to the parade as children. The chamber is holding its annual pumpkin decorating contest and Glen Ellyn children are invited to participate.
Before you head to the pumpkin patch to find the perfect specimen for carving, keep in mind the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce is putting out the call for “bootiful” Halloween pumpkins. The chamber’s annual pumpkin decorating contest is seeking fancifully decorated pumpkins, which will be put on display at local businesses. The pumpkins will be judged and the decorators of the best of the bunch will receive $10, $15 and $25 Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce gift certificates, according the chamber’s Executive Director Georgia Koch. Children may decorate the outside of a pumpkin – no carving – that is 12” or smaller. The pumpkins may be decorated using any medium chosen.
