D41 Seeking Parents for Foreign Language Committees

As the district plans curriculum for its new foreign language programs, it is seeking parent involvement in the planning process.

In January, the District 41 Board of Education approved a foreign language program to be implemented at schools beginning in the 2013-14 school year. Now, the district is seeking parental involvement to participate on committees related to the programs. The Spanish Foreign Language at Elementary School (FLES) program will begin in first grade classes next year. In addition, the Spanish Bilingual program will be implemented at Churchill Elementary School. The committees being formed will collaborate to develop curriculum and address implementation processes and procedures, according to District 41. District 41 Approves Foreign Language Instruction Program for 2013-14 School year

Dual Language and Foreign Language at the Elementary School programs will be implemented at schools in the district in 2013-14.

District 41 has approved a Dual Language and Foreign Language at the Elementary School language instruction program for its elementary students.  The Glen Ellyn School District 41 Board of Education approved the measure during its business meeting Monday night. The approval means that the district will begin phasing in foreign language instruction to students in the 2013-14 school year.  The district is incorporating two forms of foreign language instruction: Dual Language, an immersion program and Foreign Language at the Elementary School (FLES). “I am in support of this,” Board Member John Kenwood said. “I am a big fan of doing this. This will benefit the English Language Learners and English dominant students who are accepted into the program. It is scientifically proven to be effective at increasing language ability in both groups. It will be phased in over five years and is well planned.
