FM Global made a $2,000 grant to the fire company to help it upgrade technology for fire prevention and inspection programs.
For more than 105 years, the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company has served residents of Glen Ellyn and the Glen Ellyn Fire Protection District. The company relies upon grants, donations, support from the village and its residents to continue to provide services both day and night. Monday night, the fire company, which includes 65 volunteer firefighters, received a $2,000 grant to help continue its efforts at protecting and serving the community, according to a news release from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company. Local Daisy Girl Scouts send Afghanistan girls well wishes.
Over the next few weeks this column will feature many of the different Girl Scout troops around Glen Ellyn. This week we take note of a troop that shares their sweetness with others a world away. These girls have contributed to various local organizations but perhaps one of their most amazing contributions has been adopting a Girl Scout troop in Afghanistan. “The girls sent the other troop things they wished for them. Some of them put things like freedom and others put video games and bicycles. It was a wide range of selflessness,” said Elizabeth Lewis, troop 42066 leader. Among the items, were things Lewis said American children take for granted. Lewis said this large group of girls are always paying it forward. The girls have …

The announcement comes on the heels of charges that David Garmoe stole more than $260,000 from the fire company while he served as treasurer.
The Village of Glen Ellyn announced that it will immediately put into effect a multipronged auditing system that will oversee the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company. Village staff, the fire company, and a private auditor will now be responsible for overseeing the financial records of the fire department. The new system was announced after David W. Garmoe, 54, of Glen Ellyn was arrested and charged Friday for stealing more than $260,000 from the fire company while he served as treasurer. In February 2011, officials with the fire company discovered the discrepancy in the fire company's bank account and an investigation revealed that Garmoe wrote unauthorized checks to himself and his business. Garmoe appeared in bond court Friday where …

Glen Ellyn officials expect reforms will be positive for village taxpayers.
Glen Ellyn leaders do not know how legislative reforms of police and fire pensions will impact the village, however they believe it will be positive for the taxpayers. "We don't know exactly what this will mean financially for the village," said Larry Noller, village assistant financial director. "We will have to conduct an actuarial study before we can know any specifics." Village Manager Steve Jones said the actuarial study will be contracted out. He said the actuary the village contracts with also performs actuarial studies for several other municipalities, and he expects they will also seek his expertise to see how the pension reforms impact their budgets. "Each pension is different due to the number of people involved, their ages and …
