Ten Thousand Villages Celebrates 25th Anniversary in Glen Ellyn

The store, which features items created by artisans from around the world, will hold a special anniversary celebration Saturday.

Debbi Daniel-Wayman first started shopping at the Ten Thousand Villages Glen Ellyn store 25 years ago. She registered for her wedding at the store, which at the time was known for its baskets, coffee and chocolates. More important than what the store sold, was what it offered to help others earn an honest living and that is what made Daniel-Wayman a supporter first, a volunteer second and the store’s assistant manager today.  Ten Thousand Villages is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in downtown Glen Ellyn and will hold a special event Saturday to celebrate. In 1974, former President Richard Nixon released an executive order to establish National Volunteer Week. Since then every sitting president and even local mayors and governors have requested Americans put their efforts toward improving their communities through various outreach organizations. Each year during one week in April, our fellow Americans band together to illustrate the week’s theme and “Celebrate [and become] people in action”. Fair Trade From a Non-Profit

Ten Thousand Villages store functions mostly on volunteers.

When Kathryn Keller received the newsletter from one of her frequented stores years ago, she never dreamed it would turn into such an important part of her life: “I shopped [at Ten Thousand Villages] regularly, so I got a newsletter from them. One time it was asking for volunteer helpers to cover a Thursday night shift and I thought, ‘I could do that!’ So I did.” Now, many years later, Keller is acting as a volunteer coordinator for the nonprofit. Last Fall, the coordinator at the time announced her departure and Keller volunteered to step up to the plate.
