As a new editor trying to figure out the ways of the Glen Ellyn world and someone who relies on the internet for practically everything, I've been mining Facebook pages to see what local businesses are up to. While Facebook is great for social purposes, businesses and organizations are using it more and more to let customers and the community know about specials, volunteer efforts, superstars they want to recognize, new products and more. (Oh yeah, Glen Ellyn Patch has a pretty awesome Facebook page, too. We really want to get to 1,000 likes—so show us some love here!) Everything is different for our children now that we have Facebook, Myspace and all these social media online sites as well as cell phones with texting and cameras. There really is no such thing as true privacy. I remember when I was in junior high school. We used to write notes in class, fold them really cool and then hand them off to someone for delivery. The biggest risk was that someone might share your note with someone else or read it before it got to its destination. Great topic, Pam! My almost-teenagers do not have Facebook pages. I told them we could discuss it when they're 13, but no promises. Since most of my 6th grader's friends have pages, many of them have friended me. I also have a small few of my 5th grader's friends in my list.
