Court Watch: Murder Arraignment Pushed Back, Cameras in Courtroom Requested in High Profile Murder Trials

A look at recent court dispositions in DuPage and Kane counties.

The Dec. 17 hearing for Joseph Spitalli's arraignment in his murder case has been pushed back after a request for cameras in the courtroom was filed. Spitalli is charged in the November murder of a man dating Spitalli's ex-girlfriend. ------------------ A motion has been filed seeking extended media coverage of Spitalli's arraignment. The judge set a Jan. 9 hearing on the media request, while scheduling the arraignment for Jan. 14, records show. Ali Akel recently pleaded guilty to aggravated battery as part of a hate crime attack inside a Woodridge gas station in 2011. Akel was sentenced to two years of probation and 364 days of work release from DuPage County Jail, according to court records. He will also spend time in a West Chicago …

Man Indicted in Naperville Stabbing Death Pleads Not Guilty

Daniel Olaska, 27, charged in the stabbing death of a Naperville teacher pleaded not guilty on all counts.

The Naperville man charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Spring Brook Elementary School teacher Shaun Wild has pleaded not guilty on all charges. Monday morning Daniel Olaska appeared before Judge Kathryn Kreswell where with his attorney Brian Telander he entered his plea of not guilty on all charges. Last week, a grand jury indicted Olaska on 14 counts, including seven counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of armed violence and one count of unlawful use of a weapon.   Olaska is being held without bond in the DuPage County Jail. Grand Jury Indicts Naperville Man on 7 Counts of First-Degree Murder

Daniel Olaska was indicted Thursday on 14 counts, including seven counts of first-degree murder.

A Grand Jury has issued a 14-count indictment of Daniel Olaska, the DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced Thursday afternoon.  Olaska is being held without bond in the stabbing death of Shaun Wild, a Naperville elementary school teacher. The incident took place early in the morning Feb. 4 at Frankie’s Blue Room when Olaska stabbed Wild, North Central football player and Lemont native Willie Hayes, and a bar bouncer. Hayes was seriously injured in the stabbing, but survived.  The DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B.
