Roskam Calls for Growing Solution to U.S. Economy

Chief Deputy Whip says businesses must be allowed to flourish and not crushed by "heavy handed" government regulations.

America’s debt is not a problem that can be eliminated simply by cutting government spending. Instead it will require the removal of barriers to allow business to flourish, U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam told attendees at a joint chamber of commerce meeting Tuesday morning. “We have to grow ourselves out of this mess,” Roskam said. Roskam, regarded as one of the most pro-business legislators in Illinois, was the keynote speaker at a chamber breakfast in Itasca that included members of 14 chambers from across Cook and DuPage counties, including the Elmhurst and Wheaton chambers. A Wheaton Republican, Roskam told the crowd of nearly 200 that trade agreements, regulatory reform and tax reform will become life-giving to a stagnant economy. But, …

Pete Roskam is a tool, he is pro business whatever that means, but it is too early to decide if he is worthwhile. Sure the Dems made a mess with the economy but guys like the current gov. of Tx., Perry are fools. All we need is another goofy Texan to send to Washington to screw things up more. Perry is an ass and has the most twisted and inaccurate record going. Obamma mama should not be re-…   more ›

Residents Help Choose New Village Manager

A town-hall meeting introduces residents to potential village managers.

Three individuals are vying for the spot as Glen Ellyn's Village Manager.  About 35 residents participated in Tuesday's town-hall event by asking questions and listening to presentations from village manager candidates.  Village board members were in attendance to help conduct the informal interviews of the three remaining potential hires.  Of the original 82 applicants, Mark Franz, Bryon Vana, and David Forrest were the three remaining contenders. Voorhees Associates, a public management recruitment firm, conducted the search for the village and narrowed the 82 down to six potential hires. The trustees then whittled it down to the three remaining candidates. Each candidate answered three initial questions including some background …

Question for the Village of Glen Ellyn, has Bryon Vana Pulled his name from consideration for City Administrator the Position? Just wondering because this is what he posted on the Darien Patch "Bryon Vana 9:21pm on Thursday, May 19, 2011 Stan Shortly after I contacted you asking if I could use you as a reference I removed myself from consideration for the Glen Ellyn position. I can’t speak as to …   more ›

Business Leaders Confident in Village's Strategic Downtown Development Plan

Plan promotes parking deck and creation of a TIF district.

Short of waving a magical wand to jumpstart the economy, Glen Ellyn's business leaders are putting their faith in the village's strategic plan to strengthen the downtown economy.  Village leaders are looking for ways to spur economic growth in the village's downtown. Some of the ideas put forth in the strategic plan include building a parking garage, opening the portion of Main Street between Crescent and Pennsylvania Avenues to two-way traffic and the creation of a tax increment financing district. Janie Patch, director of Glen Ellyn Economic Development Corporation, said the strategic plan was created with a "tremendous amount of community input." She said the plan is a consensus document between village leaders and the business …

I hope the TIF district pans out. I've heard wonderful things about the concept from other municipalities who've used it and it seems to be a lower-risk alternative to raising taxes and increasing funds. I, personally, am a bit concerned about the two-way traffic on Main. I do believe it would help with the craziness that often is Crescent, but I'm concerned about the increase in traffic on Main…   more ›

Glen Art Theatre to Screen Holiday Classics

For yet another year, the Glen Art Theatre will be screening holiday classics free of charge.

For yet another year, the Glen Art Theatre located in downtown Glen Ellyn will be doing special screenings of holiday themed movies. Working in partnership with the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, the theatre opens it's doors early and screens holiday favorites for community members to enjoy. "It's a really nice break when you're shopping, and running errands" said Renee Barker at the Chamber of Commerce. "It's something that the family can do together and for some kids, it's there first movie theater experience." Residents who went to see the holiday movies last year, will notice that they haven't changed this year. Barker said in years past the Chamber would offer suggestions for which movies would screen, but this year the Glen Art …
