COD Board Candidate Was Fired from College After Sexual Harassment Charges

Frank Flores, Jr. was terminated from the College of DuPage for a disorderly conduct incident; he claims the investigation was “cursory” and the charges “malicious and unsubstantiated.”

A candidate in the contested election for College of DuPage Board of Trustees was previously fired from the college’s aquatics department after multiple people alleged incidents of verbal and/or physical sexual harassment, the Daily Herald reports.  According to the paper, Frank Flores Jr. was employed as a temporary assistant aquatics manager in fall 2010 until a female lifeguard reported verbal sexual harassment, a claim corroborated by another female student, and a male student who also alleged physical harassment. A patron filed a separate complaint that Flores had made comments to her like, “I want to taste you” and “I peed in the pool,” the paper said.  No criminal charges were filed, but after an investigation, Flores was fired on …

Village Links Golf Course Set to Receive $6.3 Million in Improvements

With the approval of a construction contract and bond sale, the path is cleared to allow renovations to begin at Village Links of Glen Ellyn.

A $6.3 million renovation project at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn is set to get underway and if all goes well, the work could be completed by the middle of 2013. At its Sept. 24 meeting, the village of Glen Ellyn’s Board of Trustees approved a construction contract and the sale of more than $5 million in bonds, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune. When the issue came before the trustees back in May, several were shocked at the estimated costs of construction. The price tag for the construction increased $3 million from an estimated $3.3 million to $6.3 million, Glen Ellyn Patch reported. At that time, Trustee Peter Cooper said, "I think the worst mistake we can make is to do this improvement [thinking] that it's going to be self…

Trustee Cooper got it right;"I think the worst mistake we can make is to do this improvement [thinking] that it's going to be self-sustaining based on the numbers that we've seen.". He sat in on the Rec. Commission meeting for two years and saw the inability of the golf course to run a successful food service operation (lost over one million dollars). There is NO formal marketing plan to bring in…   more ›

Village President Mark Pfefferman Will Not Seek Re-Election in 2013

Glen Ellyn Village President Mark Pfefferman thanked the community for its support, but said he would not seek another four-year term.

Glen Ellyn Village President Mark Pfefferman announced Wednesday morning that he would not seek re-election when his term ends in 2013. In an e-mail Pfefferman said it was a tradition to only serve one term as an elected official on the Village Board and he was honoring that tradition. Pfefferman was elected in 2009. In his role as village president, he serves as the presiding officer at Village Board meetings, serves as Glen Ellyn's liquor commissionioner and, with the advice and consent of the village trustees, appoints the village manager, village attorney, village prosecutor, and all members of citizen boards and commissions except the Village board of trustees, according to the Village of Glen Ellyn. Pfefferman submitted this letter …

Tap House Owner Withdraws Request for Family 'Tailgating' Events

Opposition from village officials and residents led the owner of the Tap House Grill to withdraw his request for a special events liquor license. Some community members were concerned the tailgating events would unintentionally promote underage drinking.

What a business owner hoped might become a new tradition in Glen Ellyn, turned out to be a one-time event. Before village officials could vote on a special events liquor license for the Tap House Grill, the business owner withdrew his request to hold game-day festivities in downtown Glen Ellyn following a discussion at Monday night's Board of Trustees meeting. Tap House owner Danny Sronkoski wanted to start a new tradition in town, hosting what he said would be family cookouts at J & R Auto Repair. The cookouts were to coincide with five “choice” Glenbard West High School football games, he said. But, during the Village Board meeting Monday night, Sronkoski met opposition from Glenbard West High School Principal Jane Thorsen, Glen Ellyn …

So the Village should change the town slogan to: "Glen Ellyn, a place where the only thing that gets people downtown is alcohol"? "Come to Glen Ellyn, We got BOOZE before football games"? That doesn't make a lot of sense, even if businesses aren't doing so well right now. WE shouldn't have to resort to alcohol as a factor to "get people to come downtown".   more ›

Memorial Lights Controversy Nears End

Village board hears testimony and asks questions of residents, District 87 and Our Field Our Town. Some urge board to wait until March referendum before voting on variances.

On Monday, proponents and opponents of proposed lights at Memorial Field made last ditch efforts to sway village trustees before an expected Jan. 30 vote that could potentially decide the issue that has been debated since August.  But some residents, like Don Pydo of Our Field Our Town, took issue with some village officials who shared their support of erecting lights with the Daily Herald. Pydo said their comments do a disservice to residents opposed to the proposal and expressed concern over some trustees, such as Pete Ladesic, who had signs supporting lights at Memorial Field in his yard. Ladesic said his wife placed a pro-lights sign in their yard, and was told by the village attorney that they were not in any statutory or ethical …

Board of Trustees Opts to Refinance Bonds

Move will save $320,000, village finance director says.

The Village of Glen Ellyn is refinancing their mortgage—metaphorically speaking of course. On Oct. 11 the Village of Glen Ellyn Board of Trustees unanimously approved a measure to refinance general obligation bonds worth about $6.2 million. With interest rates at historic lows, the village decided that now was the time to refinance, said Village Manager Stave Jones. "This will save the village taxpayers about $320,000," said Village Financial Director Jon Batek. There are three sets of bonds that are part of the refinancing deal, Batek said. He said the largest bond amount affected, is the $4.2 million in bonds issued to update the Village Links of Glen Ellyn in 2003. Batek predicted the village will save $244,000 on the golf bonds alone. …
