The Glenbard West team placed third overall, largely on the strength of first-place finishes from Madeline Perez in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter.
Glenbard West High School cross-country star junior Madeline Perez added two more Illinois state titles to her running resume over the weekend as her first-place finishes in the 1600-meter (4:52.24) and 3200-meter (10:22.29) races provided a 20-point boost for the Hilltoppers at Saturday’s 3A girls track state meet. According to the Suburban Life, Perez now has titles in races at (approximately) one, two and three miles, having set a state record in cross-country track in the fall of 2012 on the three-mile course. The Crown Vic that shuttled the oversleeping then-World-No.-1 to Medinah CC may have saved the Ryder Cup for Europe; it sold for about $7300 on Monday.
In the same week as golf's biggest tournament, the Masters, a piece of the sport's local lore—the Lombard Police car that shuttled golf's then-World-No.-1, Rory McIlroy, to the final day of the Ryder Cup in September—has been sold for $7,351, the Chicago Tribune reports. "It certainly exceeded the value assigned to a Crown Victoria that's been in the police fleet," Lombard Director of Public Works Carl Goldsmith told the paper. "We're pleased with the results." Staying in a Lombard hotel, McIlroy overslept on the tournament's final day due to mixing up Central and Eastern time zones, and was raced to the golf course in the car by Lombard Deputy Chief Pat Rollins, arriving minutes before he would have been disqualified. Take a look at images from U.S. Cellular Field as the Chicago White Sox kicked off the 2013 season, and see if you recognize a neighbor or two.
The smell of brats cooking on grills made its way through parking lot C off Shields Avenue. By 11 a.m. the beer was flowing. It was opening day on the southside. Chicago White Sox baseball is deep in traditions for southside families. With a growing number of baby bears in the south suburbs, it wasn't hard to find Sox fans from the North side. "I've been a lifelong Sox fan," says Dan Kochevar from Glen Ellyn. Brothers Tim and Dan Bergin from Chicago Heights hold a lifelong love for the Chicago White Sox. "We have been coming to the park since 1967," said Tim Bergin. "Of course it was Old Comiskey across the street. We have had some great memories. Remembering the 2005 season when the team beat Boston in the division." Dan Bergin …
