D41 to Revisit 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' Removal at June 10 Meeting

District 41 Superintendent Dr. Ann Riebock writes the board should have a revised recommendation on the removal of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" at the June 10 meeting.

Editor's note: Glen Ellyn School District 41 Superintendent Dr. Ann Riebock sent the following letter to families about the board's decision to remove the book, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" from classroom shelves. ----------- Dear District 41 families, In the last few weeks, we've heard from many parents, students and teachers with various points of view regarding the Board of Education's (BOE) decision to remove the novel "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" from classrooms at Hadley. This book had been available for eighth graders as a choice for independent reading. I want to let you know that the administration has gone back to work on this matter in the hopes of finding an approach that preserves choice of reading matter and …

Let's forgive the BOE for their bad and unpopular decision. In working to remedy, they are teaching our kids a valuable civic lesson - sometimes the adults don't always get it right the first time. They are listening and have a greater understanding of the larger issue at hand - censorship - which does not rest comfortably in our educated and diverse community. Confident the book will be returned…   more ›

Hilltoppers’ Perez Wins Two Titles, Girls Track Team 3rd at 3A States

The Glenbard West team placed third overall, largely on the strength of first-place finishes from Madeline Perez in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter.

Glenbard West High School cross-country star junior Madeline Perez added two more Illinois state titles to her running resume over the weekend as her first-place finishes in the 1600-meter (4:52.24) and 3200-meter (10:22.29) races provided a 20-point boost for the Hilltoppers at Saturday’s 3A girls track state meet.  According to the Suburban Life, Perez now has titles in races at (approximately) one, two and three miles, having set a state record in cross-country track in the fall of 2012 on the three-mile course. Legislation to Ban Teen Tanning in Illinois Heads to Gov. Quinn

The bill, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would prohibit all teens 17 and younger from using UV tanning beds.

Legislation to ban minors from indoor tanning beds was sent to Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday after being approved by the Illinois Senate. House Bill 188, sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont), would ban Illinois minors age 17 and younger from UV tanning beds. Currently, minors ages 14 to 17 are allowed to tan if they provide a parent's signature. Spray-on tanning is exempt from the legislation, as is phototherapy, which applies to situations where a physician supervises tanning when it is necessary to treat a medical condition. Radogno said in a press release that she sponsored the bill to protect Illinois minors from the serious health risks involved with indoor tanning beds. “Not only do children not realize there …

Insert Applause Christine Radogno. You have taken money from the tobacco industry which kills millions of americans yearly but you throw your weight around the tanning industry. Sounds to me that the tanning bed companies need to step up their game and send you a check! You are just another lying politician! What a pathetic scum bag you are!   more ›

Your Take: Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken drivingat least for some people if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way.  On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the 0.05 percent limit by having one drink. We reached out to readers of our Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn and Wheaton sites and asked them: should the DUI limit be lowered to 0.05 percent? Here’s some of the responses we got:  Linda McFarland…
