Football, Farmers Market, Fire Company Festivites: It's the Weekend!

It may be a bit soggy, but this weekend promises to be event-filled, nonetheless. Here's a look at some things going on in and around Glen Ellyn. For more, visit our events calendar and, as always, tell us what we missed in the comments.

Friday, Oct. 4

Football! Glenbard West vs. Oak Park-River Forest and Glenbard South vs. Riverside Brookfield. Read all about these upcoming games here. 

Illinois Rep. Sandy Pihos (R-Glen Ellyn) is hosting an "Honor a Veteran" event from 7 to 9 p.m. at Glenbard South High School. Local veterans and their families will be treated to free entertainment and refreshments, and each veteran will receive a certificate of appreciation from Pihos. Leqrn more here.

Only a few weeks left to check out the Friday Glen Ellyn Farmers Market. Fall goodies are plentiful through Oct. 25. Hours are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Also on Friday will be the Senior Spelling Bee, which is always a good time for seniors age 65 and older. The Spelling Bee begins at 9:30 a.m. at York Senior Center, 1502 S. Meyers Road, Lombard. Admission is free.

Saturday, Oct. 5

The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company will host an open house and safety expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the downtown station, 524 Pennsylvania Ave. The fire company is highlighting its fundraising efforts, as well as kicking off National Fire Prevention Week, with “Prevent Kitchen Fires” as this year’s message.  All fire equipment will be on display. There will be games, educational displays, and a special smoke/safety trailer where kids can learn about fire hazards in their home and how they can escape a smoke filled room.  Of course, the star of the show, Sparky the Fire Dog, will be making a grand entrance.
