Learn About Heroin Epidemic, See What Village Board is Up To, Order Fresh Grapefruit

Seven things happening in and around Glen Ellyn this week.

1. Glen Ellyn Village Board will hold a workshop meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, 535 Duane St. Topics will include goals, history and accomplishments of the Downtown Alliance, Crescent Boulevard improvements, new salt storage area, prioritization of capital projects, reducing road rehabilitation costs, moving ComEd electrical lines underground and more.

2. For the 27th year, Glen Ellyn residents will be able to order fresh red ruby grapefruit or interior navel oranges through Dec. 3 from the Glen Ellyn Rotary Club. Orders should be made at the Rotary Club website. The fruit will be available for pick up Dec. 13 and 14 at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn, 485 Winchell Way. 3. Composting workshop will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19, at SCARCE, 799 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn. Learn how to compost.

4. Heroin: the Suburban Secret will open parents' eyes to this major public health threat at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, 3015 S. Highland Ave., Downers Grove.

5. Don't Let the Fire Burn Out, the latest initiative of Rachel's Challenge, a national organization that works to eliminate school violence, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Glen Crest Middle School in Glen Ellyn. Decorate luminaria and light them in the gym.

6. Web Surfing for Seniors will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Windsor Park Manor, 124 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream. Learn how to avoid spam, scams and identity theft.

7. League of Women Voters forum will discuss a graduated state income tax versus the flat tax at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at Wheaton Park District Community Center, 1777 S. Blanchard.
