Music Pick: Prez and Lady Day
Of the innumerable musical duos in jazz and pop, the one I'd take on a desert island is Prez and Lady Day, Lester Young (1909-1959) and Billie Holiday (1915-1959). They nicknamed each other. She tabbed him Prez to signify Lester was the President of the Tenor Sax. Lady Day was his salute that she was the First Lady of Jazz. Between January, 1937 and June, 1940, they recorded 41 sides with the Count Basie Orchestra and other groups that showcase both their individual greatness and wonderful musical rapport. The feature 'I can't get started' from September 15, 1938, is among their best. Both expired within a few months of each other in 1959 from hard living - Prez at 50 and Lady Day just 44.
