Music Pick: Dinah Washington
Dinah Washington (1924-1963) had one of the most distinctive voices in all of jazz, R&B, gospel and pop. One sung note in her gritty, salty, high-pitched voice, possessing perfect diction and clipped, bluesy phrasing, identified her. She is most widely known for her lush, romantic ballads, "What a difference a day makes", "Unforgettable", and "This bitter earth", but I prefer her down and dirty side from her early years with Lionel Hampton. The feature "Evil Gal Blues" from December 29, 1943, showcases this talent. She lived hard and fast piling up seven husbands and substance abuse habits along the way. She was with her last husband, football great Dick "Night Train" Lane when she died at 39 from the latter.
