Music Pick: Bob Dylan - The Hurricane

Music Pick: Bob Dylan - The Hurricane

Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter died yesterday at 76 in Toronto. Framed and wrongly convicted of a triple murder in 1966, Carter, a former middleweight champion contender, spent 20 years in prison before being exonerated. Bob Dylan, one of Carter's champions working for his release, wrote as powerful a song as you'll ever hear of social protest and justice. One of many great lines: "We want to pin this triple murder on him...he ain't no Gentleman Jim" I first learned about this case in 1975 when I saw this performance live on a Channel 11 Soundstage program honoring record producer John Hammond, whose discoveries ranged from Billie Holiday in 1933, Bob Dylan in 1961 and even Bruce Springstein. Lot's of innocent folks, mostly poor and marginalized by society, are still locked in cages cause they didn't have Carter's high profile which aided his release.
