Help Tag Trees

Village needs volunteers to help raise awareness about the Emerald Ash Borer.

The village is asking residents to help identify specific trees around town.

“We need volunteers to help label and tag Ash Trees. We’re doing all parkway trees, trying to raise awareness of the potential for the Emerald Ash Borer,” said Glen Ellyn Village Forester Peggy Drescher.

Drescher advised that identification of Ash Trees is crucial to this effort of raised awareness.

“By tagging the trees, people will be able to recognize what Ash’s look like and identify any on personal property before the EAB becomes a major issue,” she said.

Today residents will gather for a training class. Volunteers will be provided with materials, knowledge, and specific locations (previously identified by Ms. Drescher and her team) that need tagging. Volunteers may then label the specific locations they’re given any time over the next two weeks.

You may be asking at this point, “Why this program? Why should I volunteer my time for this?”

The purpose of this event is to raise awareness aabout the severity of  EAB.

“Untreated Ash Trees will die. There are two primary reasons to be proactive about this: During the peak season if the trees die, the availability of removal companies is strained. It could take weeks to find someone who can remove the dead tree. In addition to that, when these trees die they become a major hazard. Especially if they’re near a house or a garage,” advised Drescher.

The training session will be held this today at 9:00 AM at the Public Works Reno Center, 30 S. Lambert Road. To volunteer for this event, please RSVP to Village Forester Peggy Drescher at peggyd@glenellyn.org or call her at (630) 547-5505.
