Glen Ellyn Cancer Survivor Now a Top 'Race for the Cure' Fundraiser

Jean Derrico has raised more than $5,500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for this year's Lombard race, nearly doubling her total from last year.

A Glen Ellyn woman who managed to beat breast cancer credits the help of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in aiding her survival, and is now paying it forward by serving as a lead fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sept. 22 in Lombard, the Suburban Life reports.

According to the paper, Jean Derrico, diagnosed in April 2010 and only emerging after a mastectomy and two reconstructions in May 2011, has raised more than $5,500 for the Foundation, a year after raising more than $3,000.

“Because of Komen and all the fundraising they’ve done, I had all those options available to me that didn’t exist before Nancy Brinker started Susan G. Komen in memory of her sister,” Derrico told the paper, adding that she also received tremendous support from friends, family, coworkers and her church community.
