The last three times I’ve had my hair colored, I have not been happy at all.  I want to try another colorist but feel so guilty, especially since I consider him a friend.  I’ve been going to him for over 5 years now and feel awful “cheating” on him.  Help!!!  What do I do??!! – Audrey from Naperville

Audrey,

First of all, you are not alone!  I too have been in this same situation!  It is very difficult to build a relationship with someone and then have to consider not seeing them again.  Here’s the thing.  If you had a friend who worked on your car for free and yet it wouldn’t start, would you continue letting him attempt to fix it? Of course not!  Even if the cost was free, you’d be forced to take it somewhere else and pay the price in order to have it in good working order.  Even though you care for your friend, you need a car!  The same goes for your hair.  Even though you care for your hairdresser, he is not doing your hair for free.  You are paying for something that you’re not happy with.  When I began mentoring new stylists, I would always let them know that should they see “their” client in someone else’s chair, that they should go say hello to put the client as ease.  Wouldn’t you go say hello if you saw a friend?  Of course! I recently had this happen to me when I went to get a haircut by someone else.  I still talked with my former stylist and was happy to see her.  She didn’t ask me why I didn’t book with her; she just gave me a hug and asked me how I was doing.  That is a professional.  I can assure you that as professionals, we want the client to be happy and feel amazing about their hair.  That is the bottom line.  I’m sure your colorist would agree!  There is no cheating here!  You can still look forward to seeing him!  I promise you, he’ll look forward to seeing you too!
