Viewfinder: Golden Eagles Tune Up for Regular Season

21 teams from Glen Ellyn to participate in the Bill George Youth Football League.

The Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles held their annual Jamboree on August 13 and 14 at Newton Park.  The Jamboree gives participating teams the opportunity to run scrimmages against teams from neighboring cities without having to worry about scores.

The Golden Eagles will be fielding 21 teams this year. The teams are formed by weight and age, and play neighboring teams in the same weight category. The lightest teams play in the 73 pound division, while the largest teams play "varsity" at 174 pounds. Ages run from 9 to 15 years old.

In addition to 21 tackle football teams, there is also an in-house league for flag football.

The Bill George league was named after the famous Chicago Bear middle linebacker, who gave the league seed money to get it started in 1963. The league was formed through the hard work and determination of the late Bill Pope, a Glen Ellyn resident and president of the Golden Eagles for 12 years and a coach for 22 years, from 1963 to 1985.
